This is my first time playing and I was wondering if it would be a good choice for a campaign that in all likelihood isn't going to go much above level 3 or so. By "good" I mean if I will be able to be broadly useful to the party both inside and outside of combat.
What are some dos-and-don'ts about the class that might not be obvious just from reading the handbook?

You're not really going to be operating at a level range where the three kinds of mechanic other than Drone are really going to be distinct. Exocortex has the added edge of being perhaps the most accurate of the three and, outside of the Experimental Weapon Mechanic getting a more impressive weapon proficiency right off the bat, has access to decent weapons.
That said, Exocortex ends up filling a pretty similar niche to a Soldier at these levels with some added out of combat utility so they can be pretty solid fun.
