The Best News in a Long Time: The Far Side Is Coming Back
True, it's not a comic book. However, this newspaper strip, along with others like Calvin & Hobbes, were big influences on me during my formative years. Larson's humor and insight were amazing. I look forward to seeing what new material he'll delight the world with.
As an aside, years ago the wife bought me The Complete Far Side, a two volume boxed set that contains nearly everything Larson did for the strip. The two books together weigh nearly 20 pounds.

Did the NY Times article linked in your article give any indication as to when the strip will return? I can't read the NY Times article.

Neither can I. You need an account, apparently, something I'd never bother with.
However, here is the new Far Side website. Sadly, it doesn't offer any timeframe either.
I went through the hassle of resetting my password.
The NY Times article just mentions how fans have noticed that the site's front page has been updated for the first time in (maybe) 20 years. No other information given.

Apparently, he posted a letter back in late September. I'm not seeing any indication that there's new content. (But there's no statement explicitly saying there won't be.) It looks like this is just an archive to justify him (rightly) not letting other people use his artwork.
It seems he might do the odd new piece in 2020.
I'm just happy to have access to even the old stuff online.
And the sketchbook bits are a treat.

Yeah, I've got to admit I was a bit bummed to realize it might only be sporadic new material. The sketch books are nice, but for me the archive is "me", since I have the harcover collection of the series.
Still, some new is better than no new.
And, let me tell you, that hardcover collection is heavy enough to cave someone's skull in.
