1-01 Absalom Initiation - What if the party doesn't visit an area?

GM Discussion

In the Absalom Initiation the PCs start at a party. Talking to each faction head a leads to a quest. The quests are determined by rolling on a table.

I'm currently prepping this adventure. When I rolled the quest options, the party was assigned quests in 3 of the 4 regions (two faction heads gave quests which were related to the same area).

There's nothing in the adventure preventing this, and it's even kind of neat to have multiple objectives in an area. But without the 4th area the PCs can gain a max of 8 treasure bundles. It seems unfair to punish them based on a random event.

This is the Pathfinder Society event I'll be GMing. Is there something I'm missing?

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have one per area, its not 100% clear, but I think that's the intent of the line "and at least
one factor within each encounter area." on page 4.

If I'm rolling, I role the first three and then pick the last based on what's left.

Thanks. Put in it's context that section says, "Variable elements include ... at least one factor within each encounter area." So at least one thing about each area is variable, such as the flaw in the magical ritual, etc.

I tried to do what you recommended - but when I got around to rolling Gorm Greathammer's quests I was already using all three of their options. Gorm can't ask someone to visit Westgate.

I've started rolling Gorm first for that reason.

But I just realized -- its meant to be a single d10 roll, not 4 repeated rolls. Just read the locations off the row for the one roll you made.

Ah, that makes sense. It is a single table after all.

I'm just finishing this up (my first PFS2 game as a GM) and of course have questions.

On P26, it says 2 fame and reputation for the primary success, and then in secondary success it also says 2 fame and 2 rep. Does that mean you can get 4 fame and 4 rep from the scenario?

Also I'm a bit confused about the XP. What do we assign for the scenario? The new wiki style guide is not very helpful here and I'm feeling kinda frustrated.

I feel slightly silly answering your questions since I'm in said game but...

Scenarios generally grant 4xp, and it takes 12 xp to level. Basically like before but 1 hr quests can give 1xp and make sense.

4 fame/reputation is normal as well. (2 from primary success, 2 from secondary success). Some scenarios (not this one) have bonus rep (but not fame) for certain factions, generally those indicated with a faction tag etc.
