NPC crew of a PC starship

Since the rules are kind of … non-existent, how would a GM go about filling in crew positions for a small player party?

In Pathfinder, we could use the NPC classes, but there is no such equivalence in Starfinder. Using the existing NPC rules, is problematic, as they would outshine the PCs.

Since they are meant to be minor NPCs to fill out the crew of the PCs ship (they are effectively a walking skill check), one idea is to use the Expert Array from page 130 of the Alien Archive, but with a CR of three levels below that of a PC.

If my calculations are correct, this should make them competent, without actually outshining a PC.

The Armory has prices for hiring crew and officers.

Does it say how to stat them?

"Officer stat blocks can be created using the monster creation rules beginning on page 126 of the Alien Archive, with the skill most associated with their starship role as a master skill"

Might be a little late to this one, but I like the idea 20 Sided Knight had about making some kind of feat for the Mechanic drone to be able to take at certain levels to fill in for rolls.
