Ausetitha and recharge checks

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

My friend's Channa Ti picked up Ausetitha and was thinking that her ability would work on Channa's checks to recharge her spells since spells are her favored card type. I wasn't so sure because Ausetitha's text says, "when you play a card of your character's favored card type on a check", and I wasn't sure that the check to recharge the spell still counted a playing the spell.

You would have to play another spell on the recharge check itself to be able to apply Ausetitha's ability.

The issue is not so much whether you're "playing a spell" at all, but whether you're playing the spell on the recharge check itself. Normally when you play a spell, you're playing it on another check, or not on any check. The spell's own recharge check is not likely to be the check that you're playing the spell itself "on".

The only case where it might work on is Sagacity (or any other functionally equivalent spells), since it's been confirmed you can use that card's bonus on its own recharge check. I don't think it works even in that case though because you're not "playing" the card unless you choose to activate its power, which you're not doing if adding the bonus is mandatory.

It works if you actually play Sagacity when you are making the recharge check.

It does not work if you played Sagacity earlier in your turn, and you are simply applying the +3 bonus to your recharge check.

As Irgy says, Channa Ti can uses the "Display this card next to your deck.

While displayed, when you play a card of your favored type (in Channa's case: spell) on a check, after the roll you may add or subtract five from the result" power of Ausetitha if whe plays a spell during the recharge check.

Since playing a card (incl. a spell) during a check is possible only if the card directly impacts the check, you need to play such a spell (like indeed Sagacity) when you attempt to recharge.

Note that if I'm not mistaken, in order to "play" Sagacity, you have to play it from your hand at the time of the recharge check. If it's already displayed, you aren't playing it anymore (although you benefit from it for the recharge check: i.e. you have the +3, but not the additional possibility to add/substract 5).....aggh' nin'jed by the dude.

Agreed, but just to be clear what I was talking about was whether you could ever be considered to have played a card on its own recharge check. If you play Sagacity on a recharge check then that check wasn't Sagacity's own recharge check. But it's worth making the point you made clear as well.

(and yes maybe it was a different copy of Sagacity's recharge check, but you get the point)
