What exactly happens at the end of Incident at Absalom Station? (SPOILERS)

Ok can someone clarify at the end of the Incident at Absalom Station

what happens?:
The PCs leave the Drift Rock aboard the Sunrise Maiden and are attacked by a ship but we don't find out what happens until Volume 2?.

Also do the PCs level to 3rd or are they still 2nd at the end of Incident at Absalom Station?


The attacking vessel(s), as the party will find out in the next chapter, is/are part of the exiled Eoxian Corpse Fleet. Learning more about them (and the Drift Rock) drives the plot in the second chapter, according to the adventure overview in the frontmatter.

If you go by XP, the PCs will hit 3rd level at some point in the Drift Rock. If you level up by milestones, I suggest leveling the party either right before or right after the final combat, depending on how kind you are.

Ha, nope! The cliffhanger should leave them wanting more. That way, they might even come back for the next book.


The cliffhanger should never have been there.

1st: It's a terrible disservice to the players who picked up and played this module as soon as it came out. Now their characters are scene-locked until the next module (about a month for some) rather than being able to move on to 3rd party or homebrew content.

Not an issue for our group, we just finished it this weekend and should have the PDF at least of part 2 by next session.

2nd: It leaves no room to bring in new characters to replace the fallen from the last big fights. Our group did relatively well, only 1 fatality. That's too be expected with this tough of a boss. I've seen multiple groups only make it out with 1 survivor, and to be honest we were pretty close to that point. 2 of our survivors were in low HP and could easily have been taken out the next round.

Now this understaffed group is going to be thrown immediately into a combat using an unfamiliar ship?


The survivor(s) could always find stasis pods on the ship that have the replacement PCs.
That's what I'd do.
