Disable device question

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

Hi,

Looking at the disable device section, it mentions that the GM rolls the check so that the player does not know the outcome. Then it mentions that you can succeed at the check, or retry if you notice the failure. If you fail the check by more than 5, something bad happens -- you trigger a trap, or fail to notice that your attempt failed. Does this mean that if you fail the check by less than 5, this is when you notice that it didn't work? Sounds like it from how it is written, but I wanted to make sure.

In other words (assuming the task isn't one that will trigger a trap/explosion): if your roll is <= the DC - 5, the GM tells you that you think you succeeded at the task. If the roll is > the DC - 5 but < the DC, you notice you failed. If the roll is >= the DC, the GM tells you that you think you succeeded at the task.

Thanks!

Carl
