Advice for someone coming from another site?

Online Campaigns General Discussion

So, I started playing PbP on the Giant in the Playground forums, but it's getting somewhat boring seeing the same dozen people apply to every single Pathfinder game request or recruitment there, along with their predictable objections to, demands for, and arguments about 3pp material and stuff like that. I've been thinking about coming over to the Paizo forums for a while, but the two forums (fora?) seem to have pretty different customs. Has anyone played both here and GitP (or here and on any other non-Paizo site), and are there any differences that aren't apparent from reading the PbP guides here?

And one specific related question: is there a way to subscribe to threads and get notifications on here?

While I do on rare occasion post over at GitP (using the same username and icon that I use here), all of my Pathfinder PbP experience has been here. Unfortunately, I can't give you any advice on the cultural differences between the boards, especially the PbP conventions.

There's no thread update notification that's sent via email or to your profile, but there are notifications on the board itself.

If you view a thread, the site will list the number of new posts since your last viewing as a number in parentheses after the thread title in the list. You can "unfollow" the thread by clicking the little blue "x" that's after the number of new posts.

If you post in a thread, there will be a large "dot" after the thread name in the list.

You can hide a thread by clicking the little "null" symbol in the right-hand column of the list.

You cannot hide specific users.

You can view all of your own posts in your Profile, under the "Posts" tab.

If you have ever posted in a campaign, it will appear in your "Campaigns" tab.

One bit of advice I tend to give Newbies on the Paizo boards: Avoid the "Advice" and "Rules" forums. That's where the most hostile and pedantic posters tend to let their meanness fly.

Hope this helps!

I'd like to invite you to try PFS Play-by-Post, and see how it goes. If you want to get notifications of a whole bunch of games opening, we have Flaxseed Lodge which is a hub for new games that open all the time. It is also a rather diverse and generous community that is very open to newcomers and has several hundred regulars, which gives you a wider circle of players and GMs to experience.

How it works:
You post with one of your characters in Gameplay, so that you can see when there are new notices in Flaxseed. Then I advise you to post in the Flaxseed discussion thread. Tell them that you are new. The kind GMs on there will go out of their way to get you into a game.

Also, we have a PFS PbP Convention called Play-by-Post Gameday that will be starting soon and there are a lot of GMs currently recruiting for seats. We'd love to have you participate. If you are brand new to PFS, there are a number of GMs that are reserving seats for new players.

Try us out!

Thanks for the tips. I'll check out PFS, never tried it before.

the above advice is all good and worth following. PFS gives shorter games and you can use many more characters in a shorter time span than joining a regular game. If you desire a more involved, long term commitment, any of the games under the recruitment sub-forum should suit. A well paced Adventure Path game will last years, to give you an idea of the time frame.

Don't be shy. If you have questions you can usually just ask in the recruitment thread or PM the GM you're applying with. I've run into relatively few harsh or toxic players. Most of them tend to argue amongst themselves over in the Rules forum or sometimes Advice. However, if you do have a question about the rules they will certainly give you an answer. Possibly more than one. Just know that their word isn't necessarily law, your GM's is.

I hope that helped. I don't know much about the GitP forum. We definitely have more than a dozen people. :)
