Why do Cloud Giants get scent?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Why do Cloud Giants get scent when the rest of the "core" giants(hill, storm, stone, fire and frost) don't?

They have stronger noses?

Larger nostrils?

Compensate for improved senses of other giants?

Because giants, while being a single category of monster, are a collection of significantly different creatures drawn from numerous mythologies and molded into a game element.

Because they evolved living on clouds and in fog banks where vision wasn't always reliable for identifying each other or to allow them to use obscuring mist and fog clouds in combat with a chance to note opponents' locations especially if one gets within 5 feet?

Someone really wanted a reason to give them the new Intimidating Prowess feat instead of Blind-fight?

Indeed. I was about to say the same thing.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Interestingly enough, that tale is also the likely reason that cloud giants have two possible alignments.

Thats something I've wondered about for over twenty years.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, the fi fie fo fum thing has it right. That's the reason.

I think it's because they need to be able to discern between the smells of different kind of clouds...

Yeah I mean, seriously, "Grind his bones to make my bread." You need a good sense of smell to appreciate baking bread.

Even back in 3.0, Cloud Giants were the only "core" giants with scent. Even WAAAY back in the days of the D&D Expert Set, Cloud Giants were the only ones described as having "a sharp sense of smell."

So after this many years, who can be sure, unless there's some source?

I think Jack and the Beanstalk counts as a source.

Now why the two possible alignments?

The fact that there are two main outcomes of the Beanstalk story?
