A good old-fashioned dungeon crawl

Kingmaker

My players are coming into the home stretch of Kingmaker, wherein Nyrissa and her allies will conquer Pitax and wage war on the players' kingdom.

As part of this finale, I'd like to give my players a good old-fashioned dungeon crawl to round things out. I've got a couple ideas. One would be to replace Whiterose Abbey with a good-sized dungeon. Another is a castle crawl at the Castle of Knives, wherein an Erlking (Lord D'Kara, Marquis of the Fallen Leaves, Custodian of the Castle of Knives, Warden of the Fable, and the True King of the Stolen Lands) resides.

Anybody have suggestions on good modules I can drop in there? I'm obviously going to adapt the hell out of whatever module I use, considering my players are around level 13 and mythic.

Tomb of the Iron Medusa (Paizo), Tomb of Horrors (Greyhawk; D&D), Castle Maures (Greyhawk; D&D), Undermountain (D&D; Forgotten Realms), Down the Blighted Path (Paizo),...I am sure there are numerous old adventures from Dungeon magazine but I don't have access to my archives at the moment. You could use any of the Mummy's Mask adventures or even older modules like The Pact Stone Pyramid (reskinned, of course).

Back in 2E and 3E, my DM ran dungeon crawls from boxed sets like Myth Drannor and Dragonlance. If your players have never played those settings, you can easily grab any of those older dungeon crawls and do a conversion since you already know what is the difficulty setting you want to place them at.

Castle Ravenloft and Castle Crag are two good castle-themed adventures. You could borrow pieces from Hero's Blood (by Legendary Games), a fort-based adventure, and use them in a castle-based adventure.

Personally, Castle Maures is weird enough to fit the bill as a fey-themed castle and dungeon exploration site for the Castle of Knives. You could use Castle Ravenloft for the surface and upper levels, with Castle Maures for the underground levels.

It seems like a lot of work but there are official 3.5 adventures set in Castle Ravenloft and Castle Maures.

If I recall correctly, the Curse of the Crimson Throne has two castle-based adventures: Skeletons of Scarwall and Crown of Fangs. Path of the Hellknight describes some of the Hellknight's fortresses.

Hopefully others will chime in with some ideas too.

What about reflavoring Scarwall from CotCT? I recall it as an awesome and long dungeon. It is a full book by itself but I loved playing it.
I don't know a lot about Kingmaker, though. I don't know if it would be easy to fit.

Edit: Ninja'ed xD

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The last campaign I ran was CotCT and Scarwall really left an impression. My players still love to hate me for it. With some reskinning in could be a good addition.
Not such a fan of the second dungeon (Korvosa castle). It was good in the story, but not the best if taken out of context. The layout is good though, so if you design your own encounters it makes for a good castle.
