Sign Language?

General Discussion

Is there a chance that we could have a legal sign language for society play at the start? The PFS messageboards have at quick look at lest 4 threads and one petition asking for this.

I would guess that PFS has already taken care of that to the extent that SFS will just port over the current PFS rules.

The only action that PFS had taken on this was to make some mention on how it would work mechanically and then to leave it at the non-legal drow sign. The only thing that seems to prevent this in the petition was the 7+ seasons that don't have it... At lest that seems to be the only valid one I could see.

I misremembered the FAQ that I had read recently. It was not about sign language but about deaf Oracles being able to learn to read lips.

So sign language was not resolved in PFS after all.

Wasn't there a dwarf sign language at some point?

I would expect merfolk and gillmen to have developed their own sign too.

You would think that wouldn't you? The dwarfs have there (Morse code) not a sign language though.

I would hope to see something like this in Starfinder. Beyond just being a way for deaf/mute characters to communicate, some aliens may have never developed an auditory language. Why should color-changing squid people bother with sound when they can be far more expressive with their tentacles and chromatophores?

The sign language of squid people would be rather difficult for humanoids to duplicate.

Heck, if Paizo were at all realistic about alien vocal abilities, Pathfinder would already have a lot more languages that onlu one or two races were anatomically capable of speaking (and good luck for those races to speak Common or any other standard humanoid languages).

If there was a language a humanoid could comprehend but not speak, and it was important enough or profitable enough to communicate in this language, someone would try to invent a sound synthesizer capable of mimicking the sounds that make up that language. (This is separate from the babelfish AIs that can translate meaning for meaning or as a paraphrase instead of literal word for word).

It looks like it's probably about characters using sign language, but I just wonder if there actually deaf people playing this? I'm profoundly deaf myself and I was surprised to stumble on this.

As for Deaf playing I haven't run into one, but I'm the only fully hearing male in 3 generations on my father's side of my family so...

As the starter of the petition for a legal sign language in PFS, it baffles me that they have not allowed something like this. This is my number one desire for fluff in PFS, a fully fledged sign language that PCs can learn and embrace.

Maybe there will be room for it in the future in Starfinder!

Hmm
