Scarab Sages

Two seminal DC Comics characters to return in new series

Interesting. I'm a so-so fan of Hawkman (my favorite version of him was from Kingdom Come), but I'm always up for some Adam Strange. here's hoping this can lead to some more appearances by both characters.

Katar Hol Hawkman of all people, that's an interesting surprise

I'll give it a look.

I think it's a novel idea - based on what they are saying. Those two characters are harder to define nowadays given their old-school origins. Sort of saying they have been "out of the loop" makes for a good work-around.

The Katar Hol reintroduction is interesting to me. I was always a fan of that version of the hero more than the whole reincarnation mess that they did with Golden Age version. DC has always had trouble trying to reconcile the different versions of him to make some sort of sense. I think he's had like 3 re-boots in the 90's to reconcile the different backgrounds. Adam Strange always seemed a more pulp hero than superhero type, so putting him back on Rann was always a good idea. I remember his run on Adventure Comics (I think) in the mid-80's as being fairly nice.

This notion that Thanagar and Rann have had a sort of constant enmity is a newer idea they rolled around with in the early 2000's, if I recall. I can't say it ever made sense in continuity beforehand, but I could see how it keeps the story and characters interesting outside of Earth.

In any case, its a good way to introduce them to the new DCU without forcing either character (which has never had much success solo) to support a series alone.

Indeed. That one threw me for a loop. He makes more sense, though, if it's a mostly interplanetary adventure.

LOL - it does look that way ever since the Hawkworld series.

Finally read through the first issue of (the renamed) Death of Hawkman. Interesting, so far.

Spoiler:
Couple of "WTF" moments, mostly dealing with Alanna and Sardath. Alanna looks very different, with short hair and darker skin. If they hadn't provided her name on the panel where she first appeared, I wouldn't have known it was her. Sardath (and his costume) looked to me like a mutant from Beneath the Planet of the Apes wandered into the costume department of The Fifth Element.

They didn't show Aleea waiting with her mother to greet her father, so I'm guessing she's been written out of existence along with her mother's original appearance.

And since when is Despero imprisoned in Belle Reve? I know he's supposed to be the villain of the series, but if he was locked up, then maybe he won't be the only one. Maybe someone messed with the zeta beam to try and break him out?

Also, apparently the Zeta Beam now changes Adam's clothing in transit.

I didn't think the Thanagarians were a$$%@%$ enough to be suicide bombers. Guess the writer felt differently.

The art was really nice.
