A Problem of Diplomacy and Orator

So I need some advice on a situation I have while running Skull & Shackles. One of the players has taken the Orator feat, so the player can use a Linguistics check in place of a Bluff check to tell a falsehood or conceal information, in place of a Diplomacy check to change the attitude of a creature, or in place of an Intimidate check to force a creature to cooperate.

However the problem is that there are more then a few subsystems in Shackles that require flat Diplomacy checks such as gaining Infamy, recruiting crew, selling plunder, etc. And to me at least the way the Orator feat is worded it limits what the person can do with the feat.

Would Orator count for these? Am I reading it correctly? Any advice on this topic would be helpful.


So, it only works for lying and changing attitude. In my mind that could work for recruiting crew and for spreading infamy, but not for selling plunder.

I disagree. Orator would definitely work for selling Plunder.

You can use the Intimidate skill to sell Plunder and the feat says that you can substitute Linguistics for Intimidate "to force a creature to cooperate."
That's exactly what you're doing when you use Intimidate to sell Plunder. You're not demoralizing the buyer, you're bullying him.

Infamy checks allow: Bluff, Intimidate, Perform
Recruitment checks allow: Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate
Selling Plunder checks allow: Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Certain Profession skills

Orator would work for any of them.
Some of my players have very high bonuses to social skills and it doesn't interrupt things much.

The real limit is that each check requires one full day for one PC to complete. That's how you can manage the issue with your PCs. If they want to do all three while in port, they might have to be there for a long time. There are plenty of ways for the GM to get them to be in a hurry.

The Orator feat is interesting, and having a high Linguistics bonus will be useful in certain parts of the AP later on.
