Blog: Goblins Die! Class Deck Preview

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

First you *fought* the Goblins, second you *burnt* those monsters and finally they *die*...

It is a class deck where you play one of three very brave goblins, who - whenever a heromate is going to take damage from a failed combat (you in same location assumed) - is just stepping into the line of fire to absorb the combat damage in order to protect your heromate. So the goblins are going to *die* for their masters/heromates. That is the class deck title "Goblins die!"

How about that ?
Three is a good number - you get three heroes in a class deck and only two goblin class decks are revealed so far, after fighting and burning the only consequence is dying, right?

To play such a hero constellation, you need a good healer in your party... Will this new mechanic work? So may be these three goblin will protect a weak healer...

What do the experts say?

I think it is a great idea, goblins sacrificing themselves for their heromates ...

With all due respect MyFly, and althought the idea of a sacrificial class/group is fun (or just the idea of a "Shield Ally" or "Ring of Friends", see below), it is certainly NOT a goblin characteristic.

From the RPG, goblins are mean and neutral evil. Mean-ing that they are mid way between a group solidarity and a selfish view of things.

Won't do for sacrificial behaviour.

This said, here are some ideas that I made cards out :

Shield Ally spell. Display in front of character at your location. Anytime that character is at your location and takes damage, you must discard half (rounded up) of the cards instead of her, she discards the rest. At the end of your turn you may discard that card (with recharge check).

Ring of Friends item. Display in front of character at your location. Anytime that character takes damage, you must discard half (rounded up) of the cards instead of her, she discards the rest. At the end of her turn, that character can bury that card.

Yeah, Goblins aren't known for their heroics nor their altruism. I'm going to agree with Frencois here. Not a well thought out idea when there can be cards that can be used for the "concept".

Also, if you're playing in Organized Play, one of the things you're trying to avoid is dying. So I'd agree that your idea is kinda off. Both in an OP use and in goblin-theme.

Well, class decks can not only be used for OP, right?

Frenchios had two good ideas based on my proposed concept. What do you think of those 2?

As stated many times (by Vic), the class decks are not only for organized play but they are required for organized play. So creating a class deck where the characters are meant to sacrifice themselves, especially Goblins, is not a good design. That's all I was saying. When designing class deck characters, you need to make them interesting to play as well as versatile enough to be played in any season of the PFS ACG. That's part of the playtesting that gets done prior to printing and release.

As far as the other two: a spell and an item, I like the first (needs to be rewritten but I don't hold that against what the concept is) and the second I like the design but needs to be more permanent. I'd make it a Discard at the end of turn or bury another card to keep it displayed. Also, I wouldn't make either of the boons discard cards, just take half damage (rounded up) so that damage prevention could be used.

Agreed Theryon. My concept was just that: a concept to give a quick answer to MacFly. Needs work.
