Anybody remember the days when we used to resolve PC/NPC interactions, using 'roleplaying'?
Not sure. Make a Diplomacy check to convince me to make an Intelligence check to see if I remember, and failing that, a Knowledge (history) check to see if I've heard of any precedent for that.

Anybody remember the days when you were only allowed to play a social character successfully when you could convince the DM of things... Yeah those days sucked.
Just because we have rules to help those of us who can't write the Gettysburg Address off the cuff, much less give it, still play social characters does not mean that roleplaying is dead or will go unused. It also does not negate using roleplaying to resolve those actions, it just gives a mechanical help.

EXCEPT
...for the fact that most GMs that are uncertain will err on the side of caution rather than the side of 'play' and will thus lead to the ARRRGHH that is the subject of this thread.
While saying 'expect table variation' is a very nice thing to do, I can easily see a scenario where a player who is *good at talking* IRL sits down with the player who has taken the 'feat tax'.
IRL Social Monster: "We hold up for a second, no need to murderate these folks."
SFT Social Monster: "HEY! I spent for those feats, how come you get to do that in one round without any feats to back it up?"
IRL Social Monster: "Roleplay bonuses?"
GM: FFS, why did *I* just get put in the middle of this. Now I have to hard-line RAW the sucker. *sigh* It was five pages on the forums last time I looked!
