Well, are you satisfied with yourself?
It's our first gaming night at home in a month.
I make the pizza and put it in the oven.
I carry my stuff downstairs.
I unroll my brand new battle mat, the one that cost a third of my year-end-bonus. And I feel so damned proud and smug and legit.
Hermione Crusher looks at me, wrinkles her nose, and says, "That's IT?!? I thought you were going to, you know, project it out of the ceiling like Uncle Nobody."
LOL. Yes. Yes, I am! :-P

LOL! I love it! Scheduling via the messageboards!
So, I have:
Saturday, July 22nd: Our next session, though the loot/selling discussion hasn't occurred, so I think most of that day will be spent roleplaying through Magnimar Saturday, August 5th: We are free, so sure, I'll label it a game day Saturday, August 26th: As far as I know, we are also free that day
So see you Saturday!
Well, you are the Keeper of All Scheduling Knowledge for everyone but us. And I almost always know Whingey Wizzard's calendar. (Which, btw... his travel plans for Carpinteria this year will almost always be Sunday through Wednesday. So no joy for me on Fridays.)
And I talk to you more often here than anywhere else. And I'm guessing Tac and Drejk will be patient for a moment, because they're nice guys.
Oh, and here's to Impus Minor having an excellent belated birthday adventure today!

So, an update for TL, lisamarlene, Vanykrye, and anyone else who happens to be paying attention (sniffs the air for dragons):
The more often you stop, the harder it gets to stop for good. Nice one, biology!
At the moment I *think* I'm doing reservations for 5 (the 4 "regulars" plus Impus Major), but unfortunately Impus Minor is now developing a taste for fine dining (ow! My wallet!), which makes 6. I *think* Rivoli tops out at 8 so we have room for you, but since Whingy teaches that night (doesn't he?) and my kids are booked, I don't know whether you can get baby-sitting.
Anyway, I appreciate all the concern and support people are throwing my way, but Vanykrye put it really well in a PM: It's not so much your battle with yourself; it's the people around you who enable you. I've got my entire "supporting cast" on board (NobodysWife and her mother), so it can only get better from here... right?

So what exactly is it that Chick-Fil-A is putting in their "food" that makes people lose their minds and line up for miles (literally, where I live) when a new store opens?
(Just injecting a little something more light-hearted again.)
Honest admission: I have never eaten anything from Chick-Fil-A, so I couldn't tell you.
Amusingly enough, the only time I've ever come close is when our Sunday group decided they wanted to do Chick-Fil-A one week. And... Sunday.
(For those who aren't familiar with the chain, Chick-Fil-A was founded by a Southern Baptist, and remains closed on Sundays to this day.)

Sweet tea.
Oh, gods, even the thought of sweet tea makes me shudder. Shiro's player's family is in Kentucky, and next month he'll yet again travel there to have "tea such that a single glass could kill an entire diabetic ward".
Of course, I don't drink sodas or fruit juices, either. I take my coffee black and my tea unsweetened. I lost my taste for sugar back in my 20's. Go figure.
(I'll still do occasional desserts, and I do love dark chocolate and (all-natural) peanut butter, but things like Pixie Stix or sweet tea? No thanks!)

Chick-Fil-A has been a topic of discussion at work today, so I had to solicit an outside opinion. I think I might have broken someone in my verbal assault on that particular "restaurant" chain. She keeps asking me for my opinions on things, and still seems completely shocked when I provide one that's diametrically opposed to her own beliefs. I even try to be polite about it.

Aargh. If I go out without Whingey and the kids, feelings will be seriously hurt, but I really appreciate the invitation!
Hope you have a great time!

I totally understand. My 2001-2008 was pretty much, "NobodysWife goes out to dinner with family or friends while NobodysHome stays home, watches the kids, and gets brought home takeout."
Even when I went to dinner, I'm one of those parents who won't subject other adults to my kids, so most of my time was spent letting the kids run around outside the restaurant.
'cause small kids and sitting quiet and still for 90+ minutes? Not likely!

You know, as much as I love a good fried chicken sandwich (as my trousers size will attest, or maybe that's just the poutine), it's still a fast food fried chicken sandwich.
Personally, I think that people eat there to make a counter-protest to the boycotts , not because they think it's all that.

Oh, also... Sweet Tea!
Totally valid, and important to avoid excess sugar, for health and/or preferences. I... can't drink coffee (I'm glad people love it, but... not me!), and can only drink small amounts of non-sweet tea (unless it's less common and more expensive, in my experience), though, and yet I still need rather large amounts caffeine to be useful too early in the morning. Soda steals my wind, so... limited choices. I do love it, though!

Very fair! Also, it's important to make your own, conscious choices about such things - sometimes choosing to dislike something is the best way, even if you'd normally be otherwise. Willpower and rescission-making are often tied together to conscious decisions about what we find acceptable, and how we intentionally revise our own emotional state. Doesn't make it easy, but it's true whether we're trying to drop a habit, let go of a grudge, or just change our eating. You make the decision to do the thing/change the relationship to a thing, and then you stick with it - the emotions will come later, after you've practiced the decision a lot first.

Oh, we finished Book 1 of Legacy of Fire, so I'm going to ask to (a) borrow book 2 on Saturday, and (b) keep Book 1 just a little longer in case I need to refer to it. Cool?
Yep. No problemo.
Also, where's it set? I probably have a Campaign Setting book or two you could borrow. I find the things goldmines of ideas to enrich the campaigns.

Unexpected Update: As I mentioned, last week was hard.
It looks like this week I've finally won the battle, but not the war: NobodysWife is at work, both kids are at camp 'til 3:30 pm, and my workload is remarkably light -- exactly the kind of tempting environment that is the greatest danger to my sobriety.
And yet the cravings and temptation, while there, are nothing like they were last week. Absolutely child's play to ignore. So we've (hopefully) moved past the "I have to have it" phase, and we're into the far-more-dangerous, "Oh, these cravings are easy to deal with now, so one drink can't hurt" territory.
But I got burned twice in that regard, so don't worry. No plans on slipping. Ever. At least 'til I turn 100 and can pull a George Burns and start drinking and smoking cigars.
Because at 100, why not?

So did Strange Aeons Family Edition collapse or just on hiatus with everyone being busy?
Edit: Only asking because it's odd for that one to go a month without activity.
It's just been an unusually-long hiatus: Impus Major's finals, then our Ashland trip, then our Hawaii trip, then Impus Minor wasn't feeling well two weeks ago so we didn't play, then my mother was in town last week.
We plan to play tonight, but that'll depend on Impus Minor's health...

Speaking of replacing one addiction with another...
Here, Nobody, I think you dropped this.https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/purify-your-system-with-the-seven-day-c hili-dog-cleanse
I love it!
But I will admit, it's NobodysWife who's the chili dog addict. Which is even more hilarious considering that there are VERY few foods that she's happy having more than once a month. Our usual pattern is, "NobodysHome cooks for 6, because that's what he was raised doing. Everyone eats the dinner once. NobodysHome and the kids are responsible for all the leftovers, because NobodysWife won't touch them."
But macaroni and cheese and chili dogs are her bete noire -- she'll eat those virtually every day.
On the other hand, since chili dogs are an uber-cheap lunch, it's a nice break for me when we're doing a lot of other stuff (like renting giant RVs) so we can save some money on "gamer food".
(As I posted on FaWtL, the lunches Shiro's player and I provide for the Saturday and Sunday games range from $50 (chili dogs) to $250-$300 (Chinese or Indian food, usually), so when we're "flush" we go for the more expensive ones, and when we're saving we go for the cheaper ones.)

NobodysHome |

Wow, seriously?
...
I'm going to work now.
Oh, that's only when we go nuts. I mean, when I do Chinese, I get pretty much "one of everything", and it's usually close to $200 (or even $250), but that gives me leftovers all week long -- it's not like the gamers eat it ALL.
Typical lunches on Saturdays are MUCH less: Al's and Gordos are around $60, chili dogs are $50, ribs are around $80. But once you get a bunch of different $12 per dish foods (aka Chinese or Indian) it adds up fast.
Which is why you notice we usually do Al's, Gordos, or chili dogs.
The days when Shiro's player and I go nuts are the bad ones: We can easily spend $80 at BevMo, $60-$80 at Safeway, and then $120 at a restaurant. But those are usually Sundays, and typically only once every couple of months.

Yeah, not what I meant. I am acutely aware of how much food costs.
Which is why every time I am asked for input about food, I say Al's or Gordo's so I can afford my share.
I linked a joke post about a guilty food pleasure we all share. I didn't expect to get slapped.
Awwww! You know I'm not slapping you! (At least not intentionally.)
It was supposed to be an apology that we do chili dogs so frigging often. When I'm feeding other people, I'm much like NobodysWife is with home-cooked meals: "What can I do that we haven't done in a while?"
So it's pretty much, "OK, NobodysWife, we're on the cheap this week. Any ideas?"
"Chili dogs!!!"
"Again? OK... I'll see whether everyone else is OK with that..."
So more frustration at the paucity of low-cost, low-effort solutions that all the kids will actually EAT than anything else.
Sorry to have come across as a buttwiener.

And before everyone starts throwing out suggestions, it's pretty appalling:
Impus Major: Rejects almost all fast food. PITA kid.
Impus Minor: Rejects almost anything except fast food. Oh, great.
Adults: Are sick to living death of pizza in all forms.
So it ends up being Al's, Gordos, or chili dogs most of the time, because everyone is happy with them.
Which is why, whenever we have a "surplus" week where we haven't burned out our budget, I run off and get stupid amounts of something different. It's just as much for me as it is for my guests...
EDIT: On the other hand, I have a new pressure cooker/slow cooker and a fancy recipe book that everyone says is "the schizz", so mayhaps I'll start experimenting with it...

Just pour BBQ sauce over some fancy food. Or throw it very quickly.

I think we need to cancel their gamers card.

Yes. It's called pulled pork. And it's usually 1.99/pound or less. Also, it fulfills the "dump BBQ sauce on it" requirement.
And let it be entered in the record that lisamarlene's "Dr. Pepper pulled pork" is the greatest pulled pork in the universe. Bar none.

Well, since Whingey Wizzard and I will both be collecting decent paychecks this month (teaching summer school has its upside), I can do a pork shoulder and some coleslaw and bake some Jezebels for the next game. It's the day before we go to my mom's for two weeks, so it will be the last time I have to cook for a while.

You realize, of course, that this means Hi's player will show up, fork in hand.
So I approve this plan.
EDIT: I'll e-mail you after work so we can work out the August/September gaming schedule. Shiro's player is out for most of August, and while technically I think I'm only out of town on the 19th, I'm preparing two kids who have never done anything more than car camping and 2-3 mile hikes for a full-blown real live backpacking trip, so I may be in completely over my head.
After that, school starts, so I *think* we're back to being available whatever Saturdays you guys are...
