On PbP, Specials, and gunning for the 5th Star.

To get ones fifth star, there is a requirement to run 10 specials.

I appreciate that the last PbP day featured a multi-table special, but outside that it seems a little challenging to run the 10 required.

From what i can see, the only Specials a GM can run via PbP is Serpents Rise, are there any others? The old specials have been superseded by normal Scenario versions.

Bonekeeps aren't allowed, and the multi-table specials require events.

Whats plan B?

My local groups have all hammered the Bonekeeps, so sort of limited here and need to get my sessions lined up as it till be the hard thing to get covered off.

Jesse, the online VC said they would run more online specials with the online game days.
So you can do the multi table version online.

Also, the multi table specials dont have an event requirement. You dont have to run them at cons for example. You just need to make the minimum table size. As I recall its four tables for some of them, you might be able to pull that off locally

Sweet, well the last Special went really well, so here's hoping for a run through the back catalogue for those of us who missed them in play elsewhere :)

I'll pick off a couple more at Cons/Events as you say as well...

2 down, 8 to go!

As far as I am aware, Bonekeep 1 and Bonekeep 2 are available for 4 star GMs to run and count as specials for the 5 star requirement.

They are, but can only be run in person or via VTT, not PbP, because of the time restrictions built into the scenarios.

Scarab Sages 5/5

several of us "old timers" who had played Bonekeep 1 offered to play it in CORE for a local 4 star who needed another Special or two... you might see if you have any takers for something like that among your locals... Toss it out as a challenge to them to do it with all Generics - you know, kind of "Hard Mode Bonekeep" (we did it with 2 Paladins, 2 Druids and a Barbarian and it was more fun then the first time we played it!)

Wow! That would be a pretty hard challenge...!

Did it end well?

Actually, yes.

We had a great time! (And that's the important part right?)

But the reason I mention it here is, it is a way for the OP to get in another SPecial or two, even if everyone in his game groups has played them before.

Am I right to say that Bone keep 1 & 2 are available for 4 star GMs to run Face to Face or VTT but not Bonkeep 3?

Also is there somewhere where I can see where it's stated where multi table specials don't require an event but only the number of tables required.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Anyone can run any of the older Specials, as long as they meet the minimum table requirement and follow the guidelines for running them.

Bonekeep 1 and 2 can be run IRL and by VTT by 4-Stars+.

The current specials and Bonekeep 3 are for special events/ cons only.

We'll definitely be running more PbP specials and helping the PbP community to run some on their own as well in smaller self-organized events so people get to run the older specials.

We also have some other stuff in the works for 2016. :)

That's good to know Jesse. I asked partially as I've seen a game on Bonekeep 3 posted on my local warhorn and I was curious if it's allowed.

Good to know about Bone keep 1 & 2 though.

Also, slow there is no confusion, there are two words not one.

Special is reserved for the multi-table interactives.

Exclusive is the word for the single table scenarios. Right now a 4-star can use Bone keep 1, 2, and Serpents Rise as an exclusive. Additionally, if you ran True Dragons of Absalom at Gen Con, that counts toward your 10 specials and exclusives.

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Wait, is "Serpent's Rise" a con-only exclusive? I was under the impression that only a only a 4+-star GM could run it, but that it could happen at any time. (Likewise with True Dragons and 5-star GMs.)

Liberty's Edge 5/5 Regional Venture-Coordinator, Online

No, it's not Con Only.

Serpents Rise is a 4+ Star Exclusive - anyone who qualifies can run it.

True Dragons is likewise a 5 Star Exclusive.

Liberty's Edge 5/5

The word exclusive is not used to designate con exclusive, typically. The Bone keeps were exceptions for awhile. But the term exclusive started with Midnight Mauler, which was originally designated 2-EX.

Hmm Bonekeep descriptor says 'Special'.

Serpents Rise does not have that term, and only appears to be an exclusive.

Does that mean Serpents Rise doesn't count towards the 10?

Ugh.

Ugh.

Exclusives and specials count. The current list of scenarios that can be run (not including the old one time events, e.g. Grand Convocation & Race for the Runecarved Key Part 2):

Require Multiple Tables
Spirit of the Shadow Lodge
Blood Under Absalom
Race for the Runecarved Key
Siege of the Diamond City
Legacy of the Stonelords
Siege of Serpents
The Sky Key Solution

Single Table
Bonekeep 1 (anytime)
Bonekeep 2 (anytime)
Bonekeep 3 (Con only)
Serpent's Rise (anytime)
True Dragons of Absalom (only if run at GenCon 2015, not available to non-5 star GMs now)

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Also, for completeness, is it correct to say the following?

Must be run at a Con or special event:

  • Bonekeep 3
  • Siege of Serpents
  • The Sky Key Solution

Everything else can be run at any time.

Maybe So, but in February 2014, it was turned into an exclusive, to take the place of the previous new ones like Midnight Mauler, Cyphermage Dilemma, and Day of the Demon.

I assume they are all 5+ table affairs?

Could be worth mustering up a few solid PbP GM's and continuing the great work shown in the recent event! :)

Liberty's Edge 5/5

The scenario should say how many tables are required at the beginning. But I believe one requires three and another 4. The rest require 5.

By Spirit of the Shadow Lodge, I meant Year of the Shadow Lodge (got the boon and scenario confused.

Finally traced back to the more comprehensive post about this. Forgot which Andrew had made it.
