Evil in the King's Court (King Maker)

My Character is the Magister of the kingdom and he is LE but I want to play him as a secretive person who does a lot of evil deeds behind the king's back ;so I would like ideas on how to control the kingdom from the shadows.

Do you just want to actively control the King like a puppet on strings, where he only does what you want him to do?

Or do you want to control the direction and growth of the Kingdom?

Is another player playing the King?

EDIT: Also this should be in the Kingmaker forum.

Yeah, your first step should be to determine what your Magister's objective is. What does he want to get that would require evil actions for?

Nobody is evil just to be evil. Not even CE characters.

Does your Magister want money or power? Does he have a personal beef with the other leadership and want to see them fail? Does he serve another entity with its own goals?

My master of sanctity is an asmodean cleric. his position allows him to influence the beliefs and attitudes of the population, not only of the council.
My advice would be to set yourself some gradual objectives and to initially put a stress on the legal element. Once you've managed to make laws strict enough or to legitimate acts like, say execution, it takes only a few more steps to lead the nation on the direction of evil.
Still, as the majority of people (even in Cheliax) tend toward neutrality or good, you should show the legal element of your ideas in public while maybe limiting your evil acts to the private or the emergency (say summoning devils instead of other monsters!)

  • Find NPC members of the Council and charm or dominate them.
  • Arrange for NPCs you don't like to mysteriously die, then be replaced by individuals you nominate.
  • Ask your GM if he will allow you to use the Buildings & Organizations rules to earn money during downtime and convert the capital into your personal BP stash.
  • Pick one of the settlements. Make your home there. Constantly advocate for BP to be spent there to improve it. If you ever have to betray the kingdom, this is your home base.
  • When your party deals with foreign NPCs (kings and such), figure out who is the second most powerful NPC in the foreign kingdom. Establish relations with that NPC, then help him gain the throne.
  • Offer advice that is good for the kingdom, but a little ruthless.
  • Be incredibly friendly and supportive to most of your fellow PCs. Do favors for them. Then ask them to reciprocate later.
  • Be flexible. Recognize that your ideas won't always prevail, but accept compromises that allow you to build your agenda later.
