Surprised we didn't get a topic on this.
Some sacred cows being broken. I don't see the point of going 2d6 hp/lvl instead of 1d12.
Switch to two common saves (Dex/Wis).
Ambuscade is so good as well. I could see Ranger 1 being a viable opening for any non-caster.
I do like that they're reworking the companion though, as that was a weak option before. It feels like they may be giving too much right now (though I haven't playtested).

2d6 are spent as 1d6+CON on a short rest. The entire class is built on survival above all else. It's also why there is two common saves instead of DEX/STR.
The class overall is weaker than the core ranger other than being more durable it deals less damage than a hunter and loses the versatility of spells. I think it is a fair balance, but a few people I talk to prefer the spell less ranger from the customizing classes UA to this approach. I like it, but I wish they made summing the companion refresh with a short rest.

I think it's good that they're experimenting with different design options. It's also good they're very up front about it being very mutable and subject to change.
The extra hit points are mitigated by the lack of medium armor. Also, the ranger can be a little MAD: Strength for melee, Dexterity for AC and ranged stuff and skills, Constitution for duh, and Wisdom for class skills.
