Hello.
I've made a thread about help with making a homebrew campaign. While the progress for that has gone great, I have, unfortunately hit a major snag with using map making and token making programs.
I've tried Map Maker and Token Maker-both highly recommended for GMs on the forums-but while Token Maker works like a charm, Map Maker seems to refuse to work at all. I don't know if I'm downloading the wrong program or opening up the wrong folder.
Also, I would also like for some people to review some statistics I've made for some encounters I've made. Also, if anyone would like to give some suggestions as to how I can make the encounters better (i.e. what better gear to give him, what spells can work better, etc) that would be great as well.

You run games online? Use RPTools.
Okay? I've tried using Map Maker, but that one isn't working for some odd reason. It's as if I'm just downloading empty space.
EDIT Just downloaded the other tools, and well, Map Maker won't even download at all, and the others besides Token Maker? They won't even open. At all.

Are you talking about MapTool or actually a different thing that is called Map Maker?
For MapTool you just need to run the launcher or the jar file, after you extract from the zip. But maybe you have Java 8 and that's hampering you.
You'd need to either switch to Java 7 or download Mote (MapTool's "son"), which does everything with just one file, has no Java issue, and is almost the same as MapTool, so you can use the same wiki.

Alright then. I think maybe these Java Jar Files are the major issue with everything except TokenTool.
I won't be on my personal laptop until this afternoon but I'll take a look at it.

MapTool or Mote?
Anyway, if you're going to play online, I suggest doing some test before a session to see how much it'll take for players to load maps and other graphic elements. if it takes too long (or doesn't happen at all), I suggest you read the wiki about creating repositories online, which will smooth things up.
Apart from that, when you get the gist of the commands, it's pretty easy. Draw a map on the background layer (or, much better, drop in some nice-looking map created in Photoshop or whatever), add fog of war if you wish, draw vision-blocking lines along walls and other vision blocking elements, and your map is good for playing.
But anything merely related to the map is really less than the tip of the iceberg.
If you can spare some time and will to learn and build up (or download someone else's shared setup and learn how to use it), MapTool and Mote can be set up to do wonders. One-click random treasure generation, one-click NPC generation, one-click attack/damage rolls (or more than one click, if you want to add various possible options), one-click tavern names and menus, and much more.
GM utilities in particular are only limited by personal imagination.

Mote. It really seems like all in one. Though is it for chat room gameplay, or PbP?
