I've read over the encounter at C3 and reviewed the map over and over again. I don't get it. Can't the players simply avoid the encounter by just not going up into the C3 area? Aren't the Morlocks hanging out in the C3 cavern and observing the party via the overhang? It would seem a shame for the party to bypass this encounter, especially because they would lose out on part of their treasure for the chronicle.

"Creatures: Morlock wardens guard this entranceto the interior caverns where their icy mistress lives, perched upon the overhang. As soon as they spot anyone approaching, they scurry to prepare an ambush."
and
"Before Combat Using their ability to climb, the morlocks position themselves on the cavern wall and ceiling. Using stealth, they wait for PCs to enter the room and then drop down upon them, surprising them and blocking their egress."
During my prep I infered these to mean that the morlocks would lie in wait near the cleft and not allow anyone to pass them while going up. The map is unclear, but the only explanation that made sense for me was that C3 slopes up the further you get from the main chasm flume. So the adventures climb through the darker area on the map that reads "Down to area 2" following the chasm and on the way they cross the "wide fault in the rock" which is the slope of area C3.
My players decided to explore this side path just in case and so I had morlocks do a pincer maneuver where one half hid in the fault behind pillars of ice and the other further up the chasm. Area C3 is so small that a two-pronged ambush does wonders.
