Becoming a Vampire

Advice

So I've been recently interested in Vampires as of late (OOTS may or may not be a factor), and my character might have a chance sometime soon to become one.

So I'm not especially paranoid about the vampire weaknesses, but I would rather not get fried randomly while walking around. Do you guys have any suggestions on any items or such to pick up that fit well with a vampire thematically, or help with the sunlight vulnerability?

She's a level 7 witch, and has a good chunk of change to spend if needed. She's also a sentient cat, so grappling opponents that are not already down is probably not an option.

If available, the Penumbra cantrip would be useful.

Thanks, I hadn't considered that. Luckily I just got access to a magic library that should have that.

I assume you have the slumber hex (it is a fairly common staple hex). It works both as a utilitarian option (easier to drain blood when they are asleep) and a thematically appropriate choice due to the mental powers vampires display both in legends, pop culture, and in game.

Yeah, I've been going that way in terms of flavor. Maybe it's time to expand beyond the traditional vampire to other depictions. What sort of powers do they have?

Big hat and a cloak.

Depends on the tradition, but it generally includes strength, senses, ability to transform into mist or animal form *wink*, mind control, powerful familiars (which I guess would be either more like animal companions or some magically manipulated creature, commonly some demonic hound or werewolf), their bite can be something like a curse onto death, and of course a mouth full of teeth that would make sharks jealous. Seriously, original vampires did not suck blood as let it go down their throat while mauling people to death. Vampires are also well known for their connections to plagues.

Really, the Nosferatu are accurate representations of the original tradition. Pathfinders does have a few other kinds of vampires, however. Besides the ancient Nosferatu and the Moroi that represent the typical popculture representations, you might want to look into the Jiang-shi and Vetala. Jiang-shi are vampire based off of Chinese traditions that feed off of chi and are called "hopping vampires." They are associated with improper burials. Vetala appear to be from Indian traditions, and are more creativity and memory vampires. Unfortunately, they seem to evil child spirits possessing a corpse, so they might be hard to turn into. Jiang-shi just need a ritual with a spell scroll that goes over the face

Other variants in the SRD list include the Aswang, which is based off a type of Philippine tradition with monsters that tend to be more cannibalistic in nature, transform at night, and have no problem with sunlight (except seems that you can't get the transformations). Connected to interesting folklore about terrifying witches that can separate from their lower body, fly around, and just generally freak people out.

Robe and Wizard Hat?

On topic: Maybe have an Alchemist Friend develop sunblock?

She gets it

have an alchemist develop sunblock. 10 GP a dose for 24 hours at a time each sounds fair

buy a big umbrella to keep the sun off you, it worked for Remilia Scarlet

buy a garment with a permanent penumbra effect

wear heavy clothing, gothloli dresses work pretty well. makes people think you are a noble, and keeps the sun off most of you

drink a daywalker's blood and gain the ability to walk in sunlight, actually, keep an enslaved daywalker on a leash for this purpose.

Honestly, a true Vampire can't be a PC. Not for any RP reason, I am sure that can be worked around.

It's just that any encounter that would be a challenge to the party will either be a complete & total walk-over by the Vampire, or the vampire is useless.

Very rarely will anything be an actual challenge to both the party and the vampire.

That being said, things like the Dhampir plus a few spells, feats and some houserules and you can have a very Vamp flavor that is playable.

What does getting access to a magical library have to do with the witch. She does not learn spells from spellbooks.

Penumbra wouldn't work, since Vampires are neither light sensitive, nor light blind. The spell that works for that is Protective Penumbra, which specifically calls out vulnerability to sunlight (such as for vampires and wraiths).

(Unless I've missed a FAQ somewhere, or something ...)

Highly reccomend Blood of the Night :)

I'll say more later - posting from my phone now

Dhampir.

They have their own book.

Blood of the Night.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Lemeres, I read through some of the rules on those and they seem really neat. I'm trying to find a vampire that can still somewhat remain in society, and trying to manage the vampirism is a good rp adventure.

The interesting thing about the campaign is that we are already facing enemies that are impractical to use vampiric abilities on, since they are immune to mind-affecting. But the vampire doesn't really give me any abilities that I would not already have, aside from undead immunities (which is nothing to scoff at, though).

I like the umbrella idea, but wouldn't sunblock tangle up cat fur?

And blood of the night seems great, I think my DM was already pulling elements from it, but I'll see if I could get some of the things for myself.

Also, I have a snazzy robe and hat already (comes with the spellcasting), but maybe getting an even larger and floppier hat would help.

Demonic Obedience feat, and worship Zura, is a RAW way to be vampire.

be in the area effect of a glitterdust. that will make you a twilight vampire.

Grand Lodge

I would rather go Lich.

Where do you find the information on Zura?

Sparkles would work especially well because they would stick in the fur for a long time. :D

The Demonic Obedience feat is here.

The information on Zura, and other Demon Lords is here.

Thanks.

So I just realized that I can't use any real spells while in gaseous form. This might end up being a problem if I'm far away from base. Do you guys have any ideas on how to return back home?

Is that Pathfinder Community website legally okay?

See, it looks like they're publishing large swathes of Lords of Darkness (page9-29+38-39) by cut&paste onto the interwebs.

Are Paizo cool with that?

Grand Lodge

They should be fine.

Why are you concerned?
