So a while back, WOTC put out some mass combat rules.

Has anyone tried them out yet? What are they like, what were your first thoughts on them?

I am trying to figure out if they are the right rules for my table, and your imput would be helpful in that decision.

I have not, but I tend to abstract such things. Then again, I have not looked at the rules in depth, so they may also abstract mass combat. Maybe I'll look at them...

I'll have to look at those rules later when I have more time. However, the old "teal box" Companion Set for Basic D&D had some great rules for mass combat, including use of siege engines, castles and fortifications, the relative level of the armies, and how best to use PCs in a mass combat situation. Just in case you don't care for these rules and are looking for an alternative.

I've started reading these now, and so far, they look useable. That said, I am not far in.
