Cards: using and adding

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

A few questions that arised the other day. What's the difference between a basic, elite, veteran card?
If you create a new character the only cards you can use are basic ones. That's clear. But when you create location decks, you do so randomly, so chances are you can get an elite magic item (that happened to me playing Merisiel and the darts +1) is this intentional? is correct?

Let's suppose we complete the basic adventure (Perils) and want to start RoR. We just open the box and add the carts to their respective decks, and start playing?

When building a brand new character, or when you have a shortfall of a type of card (between the whole party) at the end of a scenario, then you can only take basic cards, at least to begin with. At some point in the AP (it's been adventure 3 up until now), this requirement disappears, and you start just looking at adventure numbers.

When you build location decks, you use all the banes and boons upto the number of the current adventure, so yes, you can acquire non-basic cards - in fact, you'll need to, to be able to deal with the nastier banes you face.

At some point in the AP, basic cards will start being removed - this increases the chances of encountering the more powerful cards (banes and boons). A bit later on, you'll do the same with elite cards, again, concentrating the power of the other cards.

Veteran cards typically increase in power with the adventure deck number (i.e. check to defeat is X + adventure deck number) there are only a very limited number of cards which actually care about the "veteran" trait.

The use of Veteran cards is much more prevalent with later sets. In fact, Wrath of the Righteous tends to use more "double" veteran where it is <Difficulty #> + (2 * Adventure Deck number) early on in the game.
