Set wrote:I found Ted Kord kind of boring, and from what little I've seen of Jaime Reyes (and his supporting cast), he's much more interesting. (Granted, I've seen him mostly as a Teen Titans supporting character, or during the Young Justice cartoon.)
That said, I want Ted Kord back if they ever get around to reviving the old Booster and Beetle duo, but I'm not sure that would even make sense, since Booster has changed so much as a person since those days, and it would be a character regression of the sort they did to Scott, Bobby, Hank and Warren in the attempt to re-unite the original X-Men as X-Factor after Jean's resurrection.
On the other, other hand, I was not a fan of the attempts to turn Ted Kord into the Nite-Owl character from Watchman (or Captain Atom into a Dr. Manhattan 'homage'), fattening him up and turning him into a has-been, out of his depth and kind of the 'anti-Batman.'
I suppose that's my problem with Ted Kord, he's been so badly written in the past. Someone, perhaps Giffen, left him as a 'bwa-ha' joke of a character, and later writers discarded him entirely.
I really hate the silly ridiculous characters like Blue Beetle/Booster Gold were. Especially in a shared universe with people like Joker and Batman... It just makes heroes that aren't taking things seriously.
That said I do not like all grim and gritty either. I like a compromise. I like heroes who'll crack a little wise at the villains, but still take the job serious. So yeah... I really heated the Giffen BWAhahahaha years.
I really think the best Blue Beetle I ever read was that Countdown to Infinite Crisis issue. He was cool and competetant. Dude had skills and gear. I was REALLY impressed with how cool that character could be... then BAM.
Sigh.....
I would suggest you check out justice League quarterly. More of the beetle (and booster) you are looking for there.
Maybe it's just because I'm a fan of the characters, but I have never seen the silliness you speak of unless they were written by an author with a grudge against the characters or was writing justice league international during thr comedy years. Booster attempted to take out doomsday on his own because he heard doomsday killed superman as a kid in school. Beetle always took on long odds as a superhero, doing the right thing even when people laughed at him. Identity crisis just took that to a heroic and tragic extreme- it was a typical beetle storyline to me.
Now I'm gonna read it again, and watch one of my heroes die.

It's been awhile since I've looked at a lot of my old Cap issues, but I vaguely remember the Bloodstone Hunt. I recall Baron Zemo being one of the main villains.
I'll have to go back and reread it when I get around to boarding and bagging the Cap stuff.

And that's probably the heart of my problem right there. Much of what I remember of Beetle is when he was being written by Keith Giffen, who pretty much takes a steaming dump over any character he's writing in his push for cheap laughs.

I loved some of his battles against the Serpent Society back then. Kind of wish they'd have had that group either name-dropped in the MCU, or show up on Agents of SHIELD.

Me too. And I always remember people pushing for MORE of Giffen's funny League. Pretty much turned THAT version into the 'iconic' version...
Really did like Booster vs. Doomsday. Probably my favorite Booster issue. Though I did like some of the time traveling Rip hunter series... That was a bit more serious.

I liked the comedy years but Giffen is not nearly as funny as he(and his fans) think he is.

Anyway, back to reminiscing.
A few days ago, I started bagging and boarding my Nightwing collection. I always liked that series. Bludhaven was a good invention, kind of an ugly step sister of Gotham. Solid writing from Chuck Dixon for the first several years. Then Devin Grayson took over and broke up Dick and Babs. Boo!!! She also had that awesome story line where the second Tarantula killed the second Blockbuster.
Anyway, I loved that the series took Nightwing out from under Batman's shadow, yet still managed to show just how much like his mentor he'd become. There was a mutlipart story with Batman early in the series run, and that's still one of my favorites. Primarily because it shows Batman as not being a complete a$*$~+&. There were also a couple times when Tim Drake Robin showed up. Those were cool in a big brother/little brother way.
The original artist was Scott McDaniel. Still love his stuff. It's instantly recognizable.
Anyway, still working my way through bagging and boarding the series.

Oh I know this one! :)
I actually have a lot (I think all?) of the Justice Leagues from the BWAHAHA years. I actually loved those years. Now wait, I'm not claiming they were the 'bestest evers' version of, or the most well-written comics, I see your statements and acknowledge them.
But for me, who grew up on the JLA and such from the 70's, it was a return to my roots. Yes the heroes had villains to fight, and had to be serious at times. Some of the bad guys were BAD. But they were FUN.
To me they were what I would hope I would be like if I got superpowers and had to face a different maniacal villain every week. Would I become dark and brooding like all the modern-day versions of the heroes seem to be turning into? Or would I one-punch-knock-out Guy Gardner in the face?
I know my choice. :)
Love the tripping down memory lane. Carry on! :)

Not a reminisce, but an observation....
Flipping through the new Marvel Previews magazine I picked up today, and noticed they were introducing a new chick Electro. My first thought was...
"What happened to the old Electro?"
My second thought was....
"Couldn't they have at least done a big of a redesign on the costume. It still looks like the same goofy mask."
Seriously, come on dudes! Stream line that shit!

I loved that series.
For me, it was an example of what Batman SHOULD be. The Batman I had grown up with, was the ultimate detective, used brains over brawn. Had allies... friends... Athletic ability... but he was still mortal and the underdog against superpowered enemies.
By the time this series came around he was firmly in Bat-god mode who was the bestest at everything from teleportation devices spaceships, hated his allies and could beat anyone with a little planning... which he had already done for Everyone...
He was not MY batman. He was an ugly caricature of what had made Batman popular.
Then Dick got his own series... and he was EVERYTHING that I wanted in Batman. He was friendlier, he wasn't obsessed with vengeance... he wanted to HELP people. A fantastic fighter and detective... but never 'the bestest ever was...'
GREAT series.

One of the better moments in the Young Justice cartoon had the League arguing about whether it was appropriate to have Captain Marvel on the team, now that they knew he was only ten years old, and Batman sticks up for him being at least allowed to remain in the room while they discussed his membership and Wonder Woman says, 'Sure, you'd stand up for him. What was Robin, eight years old, when you started training him to be just like you..' and Batman snaps back, 'I started training him so he *wouldn't* be just like me.'
That's kind of the whole deal with Dick Grayson, IMO, and where the comics seem to get it so wrong when they have him take up the cowl, as if his destiny is to replace Batman, when it always seemed kind of the point that Bruce never wanted him to be the Batman, or to have some sort of grim neverending quest for justice/vengeance take over Dick's life, the way it kind of did his own.

I have an old comic or 3 buried deep in my collection (Nowhere NEAR as many as Zombie!) But I have a 'Bat-Family' super sized comic that includes a story of Batman (Who fakes his death for this story to trick a bad guy), and has Robin and Bat-boy (Bruce Wayne's son? I think this was Earth-2?) fighting over who was going to inherit the cowl. I think they had a contest over who could solve the case/catch the bad guy the fastest, and the winner took the cape and cowl.
AGree with the Young Justice cartoon was great. :)
At least until they went into the near-future with the alien invasion thing? Still not excited about that part. But until then it was awesome!

Of course Patrick submitted. I don't think he's ever had Popeye's, so it makes sense he would make the mistake of thinking your New York born blasphemy could in any way be better.
And I'll never submit to that garbage for two reasons: (a) The power of the spicy chicken which flows through these withered veins, and (b) I'd have to actually set foot in that cesspool of a city, and the only way that would ever happen is if I were in chains.

I still eat Popeye's when I can't Kyochon or Bonchon but I'd pick the two latter over the former if given the opportunity.

Because I don’t have enough fuel for my nightmares….
O’oloos the Strangler is an octopus of unusual intelligence and size (though not so big as the “giant” octopus) who hires himself out as an assassin to various undersea powers, typically the sahuagin or aboleth. None know for sure just how the sinister cephalopod acquired its enhanced intelligence. One rumor states he was a normal octopus who swam into a temporary rift to the First World and was changed by the energies there. Another rumor says he was the product of an experiment by a powerful kraken or aboleth, and that there may be more like him. Yet a third rumor says he was once the animal companion of a fierce sahaugin ranger, and that this master of his provided him with both the intellect and training he uses to achieve his death-dealing goals.
