Yoeman Rand has passed away.
Despite what her position stated, she was not used too much in the first half of the season. I feel her roll was short changed by the writers, even befor her drinking problem came up. Maybe if the had treated her character as a person instead of eye-candy she would have fared better.

I love the point in the episode "The Naked Time" when, after Lt. Riley had already shut down the warp engines and the Enterprise was falling out of orbit, up on the bridge an exasperated Captain Kirk orders Yeoman Rand to "take the helm," like she would know how to pilot the ship!
Anyone on the Bridge is most likely cross-trained enough to be at least minimally capable to take any other station. Yeoman still means Starfleet Officer, not someone sent from Orion Escorts.

I kept my post to who was considered the main characters.
LaSalle was only in 3 episodes, and yes Michael Barrier still lives.
As do Eddie Paskey who played Lt. Leslie (backup helmsman), and John Winston who played Lt. Kyle. Kyle was the only other character to appear in the movies; he was Commander Kyle in Wrath of Khan.

As much as Trek has lost many of it's original crew, it doesn't compare to the mortality rate of Babylon 5, which lost two of it's key actors within a couple of years after the series closed, with the latest loss being Michael O'Hare who was battling serious illness during his one year stint on the program.

The two most common redshirts have outlived half of the bridge crew. Eddie Paskey was in more episodes than George Takei (who was trying to have a film career), although he wasn't always playing Mr Leslie. And he died once. Came back next episode without any explanation.
Rand was mishandled as a character and GLW was treated badly as an actor. It was good to see her back in the later films.

The story you are talking about is Obsession.
Although Lt. Leslie is killed by the cloud creature, he is seen later in the episode walking in the background. According to Eddie Paskey, a scene was written in which Leslie and the others killed by creature are revived by Dr. McCoy but it was not filmed.
