Jemma Redclaw encounter questions

1- Do the encounters with the Shackles ship followed by Jemma count as sequential checks? So if there are 2 characters at the location could one check against the ship and the other against Jemma? Or does that rule only apply if both of the sequential checks are on the same bane?

2- Does the ship have to be defeated in order to encounter Jemma?

1 - No. Sequential checks are done when a card's check-against is "skill # THEN skill #." Whoever pulled Jemma must deal with the Shackles Pirate Ship.
(I say card and not bane, as there are some Ally boons that are "skill # THEN Charisma/Diplomacy #," which allow the same rule for sequential checks. :)

2 - No, unless the summoner (the card doing the summoning) says so. Jemma doesn't; she only says: "Before you act, recharge a card, then summon and encounter the ship Shackles Pirate Ship."

So you can fail to defeat the ship, have to deal with the Structural Damage, and then fight Jemma. You can (eg, if you're Merisiel) evade the ship, and then fight Jemma.
