Psychopomp Witch Patron

Homebrew and House Rules

So, my scarred witch doctor has a psychopomp for a patron, but I don't really feel any of the pre-existing patron themes fit. What do you guys think thematic spells would be?

What kind of psychopomp are you using and how are you flavoring it? In Pathfinder a lot of psychopomps are pretty much grim reapers, but if you don't like the Death Patron I'm guessing there's something specific you're looking for.

Here are some ideas based on the generic psychopomp, but it might not be quite what you're looking for.

The Death Patron is probably a good start, though it's not perfect. The first four spells (Deathwatch at 2nd, Blessing of Courage and Life at 4th, Speak with Dead at 6th, and Rest Eternal at 8th) seem pretty in theme with a psychopomp patron, so you might want to consider those for a start.

For 10th level, maybe Waves of Fatigue to represent death closing in a weakening a person before their taken, or the tiredness that the weight of life puts on someone.

I'd use Undeath to Death at 12th level. Since psychopomps are responsible for taking souls from the material plane, it makes sense that they'd provide a spell to destroy undead that defy the natural order of life and death.

Maybe keep Finger of Death at 14th level from the Death Patron. It's a tool for inflicting death on those that try to stop them. You could also use Ethereal Jaunt, to represent becoming spirit-like and intangible.

Maybe Trap the Soul at 16th to represent their taking souls that are unwilling just the same as willing ones.

Another maybe. Energy Drain at 18th level to represent their sucking away the soul at death.

Maybe look at the Death or Repose cleric domains for ideas on spells and abilities. Repose especially seems fairly appropriate:

Domain Spells: 1st—deathwatch, 2nd—gentle repose, 3rd—speak with dead, 4th—death ward, 5th—slay living, 6th—undeath to death, 7th—destruction, 8th—waves of exhaustion, 9th—wail of the banshee.

What sort of patron concept do you aim for, OP? I can see quite a few of the existing patrons being an ok fit for a psychopomp, so I am curious why you do not find them good in your case. Off the top of my head:

- Ancestors - communicate with the spirit of your forefathers and tap into their might.
- Boundaries
- death (sort of obvious)
- occult (pretty much everything except snake staff can be seen to do with spirits or ghosts)
- peace (death is often associated with calmness)
- spirits

I would take one of those and possibly check with my DM to substitute a spell or two that really clash with my concept. I guess the question is, what do you expect the psychopomp to be/do?

My character serves Psychopomps and helps eliminate undead threats. I think some of the lists are kind of clear, but the fact that they have animate undead and things of that sort ruins it. Ideally, I'd like spells that destroy or prevent undead.

Thanks for all of the input so far.

Since Pharasma despises undead, Pharasmin clerics with the Death domain replace the animate dead domain spell with speak with dead, replace create undead with antilife shell, and replace create greater undead with symbol of death. Clerics with the Souls subdomain (Advanced Player’s Guide 96) replace the animate dead domain spell with speak with dead.

You may not be worshipping Pharasma specifically, but these may be some good suggestions for spells to substitute in to make a list that works for you.
