Hello guys!
im a brand new GM as my usual GM is wanting to be a player rather than running all our games.
ive been reading the adventure path and im getting aquainted with all of the pre made characters and establishments. im doing my best to learn about the history and circomstances of wati as well.
My biggest problem is filling in the blanks. i couldnt come up with a good enough intro for the groups gathering.. our start was more or less a rocky one.
I need pointers on GMing and im not quite sure where to start with putting the story together well enough so im not always stuck once the PCs do something unexpected.
Again this is my first game im running so please be patient with me, thank you

Hello back!
I hope you're having a lovely weekend:-)
Not to worry we all start somewhere,
you're the boss now! it can be a lot of fun:-)
a few specifics could help, as otherwise i'm pretty much reduced to cliche "Have confidence" "don't let them walk all over" type answers, and thats obviously not what you're after:-p
What made the intro rocky?
Is the Gm turned player willing to help, or is he taking the sink-or-swim approach (i myself learn better doing it myself so i prefer to sink or swim personally, but its obviously not for everyone:-p)
the gazetteer of Wati in the first book is a great place to start mining for ideas on what to do when they go off the beaten path (of course having thugs beat them back onto the path is one idea) the Mummy's Mask message boards is your best resource, the author of the first book Jim Groves is usually helpful to new GMs, he might stop by with some fill-in the blank ideas.
let your imagination go wild, i myself would find a way of incorporating the Sphinx on the island in the river, also the flotilla ghetto (can't remember the name)
the Osirion books are also good for ideas and such:-)
hope i helped
good luck, have confidence, don't let them push you around, and have a wonderful weekend:-)

Welcome to the rewarding world of being a gm. The story in mm doesn't really get kicked into gear until book 3 though. However in pt 3 of book 1 and into book two focus on how someone totally stole what appears to be a mask or headdress and they have legal right to get it back. Then in book 2 bump up the rumors about gold masked person sightings to keep them looking.
The transition from book 2 to 3 is a bit weak so maybe have sebti suggest going to tephu to both rid her city of the mask and to push plot.
Book 3s research amidst the cult attacks really sets the mood that the pc's have an adversary, and as long as you help massage their needs for self defense, revenge or glory, they should head to the parched dunes just fine. From there the rest of the story just kind of flows into the next with a spot for a lot of downtime after book 4.
