Exotic Shields and Exotic Shield Proficiency

Homebrew and House Rules

Exotic Shields are specially shaped and balanced light or heavy shields that can be used in pairs, effectively doubling the benefits and penalties of the non-exotic shield they are modeled after. Exotic Shields can be used as duel weapons.

The Exotic Shield Proficiency Feat grants the ability to use one type of Exotic Shield, such as exotic bucklers or exotic heavy shields. The only requirements for this feat are proficiency with shields and a base attack bonus of +3. Tower Shields cannot be Exotic Shields.

When enchanting Exotic Shields with shield special abilities, they are treated as one shield. When enchanting Exotic Shields as weapons, they are treated as a double weapon with each shield being enchanted separately.

As part of the Total Defense action, a wielder of Exotic Shields gains a percentage of cover equal to their shield bonus x 10. This cover does not stack with cover gained in other ways.

Here I was hoping for a set of unique mundane shields with different special abilities. Color me disappointed when instead I get:

Dual Shield Wielder
This allows you to wield two shields at once, gaining the benefits from both.
Prerequisites: base attack +3, proficiency with shields
Benefit: Shield bonuses from shields wielded in both hands, stack. Tower shields cannot be used in this way. When you attack with either or both shields you still lose their bonus to Armor Class until the beginning of your turn.
While wielding two shields and using the total defense action, you additionally gain partial cover.

Why not both?

That's a pretty cool feat.

I am not a big fan of the any character wielding two shields. But this is a fantasy game so whatever floats your boat.

Also it should read "shield bonuses to Armor Class" stack. Teach me not to proofread before hitting the submoot button.

Also, still waiting for my exotic shields.

besides the Klar.

Gokstad

This variant of a Heavy Wooden shield is designed to be gripped in the center rather than strapped to the arm. This ease of carry allows it to act as a Quickdraw shield. In addition it can be picked up from the ground without provoking an attack of opportunity. Its design lends the shield to a style of defense that is very fluid and capable of binding or trapping enemy weapons to the outside of preferred areas of attack by pushing against the enemy's arms with the leading edge of the shield while simultaneously protecting the entire flank. When employing a Gokstad shield, you gain an additional +2 shield bonus against light or one-handed weapons. This bonus only applies against opponents within one size category of you.
