We have just finished a campaign using only the free downloadable rules. A few of the group were not keen on spending MORE money on ANOTHER game after 4e took our money but failed to really grab us. We all like PF but with all the books in play it has moved from fun to full time job to make a character*.
So we all agree Free 5e stuff only. It was some of the most fun RP sessions I have had in ages. Due to the more DM-friendly style of game it wasn't really a problem that the rules do cover everything and never slowed the game play down.
Anyone else for either moral or financial reasons going Basic 5e?

*We do like the idea of PF core and that will likely be our next game. Still 5e plays at the table very well in my opinion.

Are you going to keep expanding your "free rules" campaign as more free pdfs get released, such as the new elemental stuff? Also, keep checking back in the basic rules, as WotC supposedly will keep updating and slowly expanding them.
And yes, $150 is a lot of money, which is why I got all three books from Amazon for about $100 and free shipping. :)

I like Basic because it's a simpler game, not because of moral or financial reasons. What I do is that the pregens I offer are Basic, but if someone wants to come to the table with a PHB character, they're welcome to join.
Another nod to my love for Basic 5e is that I've so far nixed the multiclassing and feats.I commend this approach, and were it not for the deal that I received on the core book
Core book? Which one is that? I pretty much see the Starter Set as the core product and PHB, MM, DMG, HotDQ, RoT, and PotA as optional expansions. I skipped the Tyranny books but I'm looking forward to Princes.

Yep, as they release free stuff. As my players get more comfortable with the game I'm sure they will think about buying the full rule books. But for now and until the gun-shy reaction that 4 e caused wears off we'll just keep adding 'free' bits and pieces as WotC release them.
Good sign for 5e is with the Elemental release my players decided to have another 5e bash rather than PF CORE. Not a comment to which game is better or worse but I do like DMing 5e. Oh the power ;)

My pardons. I had meant to say the player's handbook.
But you have a point. I have not as yet had a chance to purchase the Starter Set, though I imagine that it will be among my future acquisitions, especially for my children.
What is it about PotA that has you excited over the Tyranny books?
A couple of things: I heard that Tyranny was a bit linear. Since I haven't read the books, I don't know if that's true or not. PotA was written by the same guy that did the amazing Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure in the Starter Set. It can still be linear though. I sure hope it isn't.
Second, while I love Tiamat, I also really groove on all four of the princes. Aerisi is my favorite so far.Third: I love genies even more than dragons (I'm running al-Qadim right now).

It does seem Elemental Evil will be more sandboxy. More here:

For everyone using just what is available as a free download, do not forget to go to the product pages for Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. There are free PDFs available that include the magic items and monsters appearing in the adventures that are not detailed in the Basic Rules:

And hopefully, sometime next month one of these will be available for Princes of the Apocalypse too.

They already have something similar out for Princes of the Apocalypse, which includes 4 races (aarakocra, svirfneblin, genasi, goliath) and a number of elemental-based spells. I am sure there could probably be an extra one for when the adventure itself comes out.

That is a different thing. It is a player's pdf. The one for the previous adventures are pdfs for the DM, so yes, there will hopefully be one of those for PotA too.
And Lorathorn, it was available on the WotC site first, and probably got added to the other sites because it is free and meant for everyone who plays, not just DM-only info.
