February is a pretty short month. So how do you handle time in your gaming system? The standard agreement is that time goes as fast as the playing group desires it to go, with battles and high-action sequences broken down into rounds (about 3 seconds) in order to establish what everyone’s doing. It works well for most people and skips the boring parts, even though that “ellipses” of time still breaks the game and makes the players step outside the adventure in order to shift back to the new time.
One way to offer a new time-style to players is to plan out a specific adventure down to the minute and present an hour-long timespan of action. With the rounds broken up you’ll still total out to about 3 to 4 hours, but there is no ellipses; it’s one hour of high-tension action.
Another method that is commonly use is the “you wake up in a ___________” and the players have to decipher what has happened over the past day/week/month, etc. Sometimes, the GM hands them their assignment this way; other times, they just use this technique to mess with their players before heading to the real adventure. It can be used awesomely if the characters find themselves involved with an adventure that they didn’t know they are a part of.
Some games have ways to mess with time, putting the party forward and back on their timeline so they can either repeat mistakes or see what happened because of their actions. As with most time manipulation, it may be that this is time that is more observed than actionable, so you may want to keep its influence small.
Giving players deadlines more often fails than succeeds; you end up fudging the timeline so that you can have your climax without the PCs failing, and everybody feels lesser for that need.
Speaking of deadlines, here’s this month’s releases.

The Roman Coliseum
Win the Brass Ring!
The Roman Coliseum: There are four chariot racing teams that run the arena—the Red, the Blue, the Green, and the Purple. Those who race the arenas are owned by the coliseum, bought and paid for. The only ways out are death, old age, or, once in a great while, being awarded the brass ring—the ring of freedom. Win enough races, and you too might win that brass ring…At least, that's what the overseer says the morning of every race. But nothing in the coliseum is ever so simple.
Chariot Racing and Intrigue!
The Luck of the Blues: The Blues have a lot of luck—all of it bad. Only, a lot of that ill luck has to do with the fact that the Emperor favors the Greens, and his manner of favoring the Greens is to insist that the Greens always win. The Greens have won every race in every coliseum in the Empire for years now. This means only the Greens have a chance of winning their freedom. It is enough to drive a racer mad...and it has done just that. One of the Blues is about to rebel and try to win. He is going to do it, even if it ends in the Emperor ordering the death of all the Blues of that arena (which is just what the Emperor did to the last team to beat the Greens).
When you want to game for just one night, One Knight Games provides everything you need. From reading the rules to making characters to playing the adventure, everything is geared toward having it all happen in a single night. The game rules are free, so download the system at http://www.rpgnow.com/product/124526/One-Knight-Games-Free-Rules?cPath=1658 _19945 and check it out. Then try out the new adventures in the coliseum, which combines heroics and intrigue!
The adventures of One Knight Games provide the story, maps, and descriptions of encounters—everything you need to run the adventure. However, they do not tell the GM what to say during an encounter, nor do they dictate how to run said encounters. These things are up to the Gamemaster to decide. This issue of One Knight Games offers a full night’s worth of fun, everything you need to run a fast, fun game with little effort and very little prep time.
Need a fast game to fill the night? Avalon is ready to help with our One Knight Game system. Get a free copy of the rules on the website, and get your game on.
