Original characters are a great thing, there's no denying that. Since there's a thread for worst, I figured there should be one for best.
My best was today. One of my players gave me the standard backstory of "village slaughtered by orcs", and I was just about to roll my eyes, when I learned that, instead of going to angst town, the character used that to become a better person.
What's your favorite?

Best roleplaying was a friend playing a wizard. His original character was a cavalier. The cavalier died during a situation that went pear shaped. His replacement character was the cavalier's husband a wizard. Despite evidence tot the contrary the wizard would not believe his wife was dead. All campaign he would imagine seeing her and was bat crap crazy about it. He kept this up for a long time and was a lot of fun.
Backstory?
Meh. I tell my players to give me a description of personality, birthplace, and family. I tell them anything over a paragraph I probably wont read.
