Geist, the Sin-eater as a non-psionic Elan

Homebrew and House Rules

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So for the last year or so in my spare time I've been trying to convert the World of Darkness games into very generalized playable pathfinder character races. Paizo did a great deal of the work for me; humans (mage and hunter), dhampirs (vampire), and skinwalkers (werewolves); With a little tweaking tieflings (demon) and Androids (promethean); and I'm not bothering with changeling or mummy.

I got hung up on using the Elan with the reconstruction alternate racial trait for Geist, at first I thought i had to create an entire complex rules sub system to make it work. Then just the other day I was hit by a great breakthrough using K.I.S.S. philosophy and this is what I came up with.

Geist

I'm mostly looking for feedback on balance, but if you're familiar with the source material of geist I want to know if these mechanics match the basic fluff of that game. Any help is appreciated though.

Can I suggest you to use the Spiritualist from the playtest of Occult Adventures? I think the concept is closer than simply using the elan. Plus, the link doesn't open.

Quote:

Becoming a spiritualist is not a calling; it’s a phenomenon. When a creature dies, its spirit f lees the body and begins the next stage of its existence. Debilitating emotional attachment during life and other psychic corruption causes some spirits to drift into the Ethereal Plane and descend toward the Negative Energy Plane. Some of these spirits are able to escape the pull of undeath and make their way back to the Material Plane, seeking refuge in a psychically attuned mind. Such a fusing of consciousnesses creates a spiritualist—the master of a single powerful spirit whom the spiritualist can manifest upon the world to do her bidding.

Role: The spiritualist seeks the occult and esoteric truth
about life, death, and the passage beyond, using her phantom
as guide and tool. The connection with her phantom spirit
allows her to harness the powers of life and death, thought
and nightmare, shadow and the pursuit of ultimate truths.

The only thing that might sound a little off is that the phantom is actually something that comes into play and can be seen, as well as attack people.

Racial Traits +2 to one ability score: geist gain a +2 bonus to one ability score chosen at creation to represent their varied nature.

Spirit host: For the purposes of effects targeting creatures by type (such as a ranger's favored enemy and bane weapons), geist count as both humanoids and undead.

Medium: geist are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.

Normal Speed: geist have a base speed of 30 feet.

Unnatural presence: Although human in appearance, geist suffer from a nature slightly off from the rest of the society. They suffer a -2 penalty to Charisma based skill checks when dealing with non-geist.

Reconstructive Plasm (Su): once per day as an immediate action, a geist may heal a number of hit point damage equal to his constitution modifier.

Sustaining Spirit (Su): A geist can sustain his body without need of food or water. If he takes 1 damage, a geist does not need to eat or drink for 24 hours.

Immortal Spirit: When a geist takes a level in a favored class, he can choose to gain an additional daily use of his reconstructive plasm ability instead.

Languages: geist begin play speaking Common. geist with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except secret languages, such as Druidic).

No link needed now
The spiritualist class does makes me realize Outsider might result in a better flavor match than undead

Cool, anyway. You should probably make some feats to grant them abilities to make ghostly things.

Thanks

Feats and archetypes will come after I get a good base to build from, but first I need a race that is basics of what a geist is.
