Pets in RPGs

Gamer Life General Discussion

One of the key items all of my younger players ask for after playing SimpleDnD for a while is, “Can I have a pet?”

So I asked around, and the internet had very little in the way of pets in any RPG. I asked on a few boards and still not a direct line to pet rules. I read some reference, scratched my head, and here’s what I’ve come up with.

Sovereign Court

Animal companion, or familiar rules?

Animal pets - simple

Had this come up in a Shadowrun game.

The group's rigger had a pet housecat that, somehow, he trained how to operate a vehicle-mounted heavy machine gun using specialized controls. The cat was the best fire support the team ever had; it rarely missed.

It was confirmed as a normal cat. Half the team was absolutely certain it was some kind of paracritter, but it was just a cat.

The cat eventually got retired when Johnsons started hiring the team just to get the cat to do a mission. Plus, we got tired of corporate capture teams trying to kidnap the rigger's pet.

The cat has been referenced a few times since then, including once piloting an airship in Eberron.

I'm treating pets as small boosts for players. I'm going to work on Familiars and mounts separately.

Shadow Lodge

Anybody can buy a pet. But they had better have the handle animal skill if they want to get their pet to do anything.

Use the leadership feat and scale it based on level. Use negatives for characters under under 7th level so that the pet doesn't outstrip the PCs but can still survive.
