Smelting and other raw material compacting services.

While gathering materials far from my home base I had this thought:
"It would be nice to have someone in the nearest settlement that would compact my coal and iron in a nice iron, less weighty iron bar. Or my copper (especially when I have gathered fine and not solid copper) and other materials for ease of transportation."

So:
- how much would you pay for that kind of service?
- how much would you ask for it?
- it would create problems with excessive gathering?

The idea is that another player will do the gathering and a local player will do the refining-

I would figure out how much copper you can get from killing mobs, in "x" amount of time, figure out how much ore you can get in "x" amount of time, and how long it takes to refine it.

Do comparisons on value gathering/hunting and find a good match up.

Ideally, if I was going to go into town to get the ore refined, I'd probably just rather buy it outright and not have to bother with the gathering.

The auction house being usable would probably facilitate all that I think.

The problem with coal and iron is that they don't tend to be in the same place - at least not in abundant numbers.

Also you need to craft + versions. 10 coal and 10 iron = 10 encumbrance, 5 steel ingots = 8 - so that isn't much of a benefit - unless you use inferior quality - which I wouldn't recommend - see my strip mining post.

As a smelter, I would be happy to do this for a gatherer, and instead of payment in coin, I would prefer to keep a percentage of the raw materials.

Maybe 10% would be a reasonable fee?

It's important to understand that there are a number of Refining Recipes (for example, Sage) that require Copper Ore and can't use Copper Bars.

I wouldn't expect any Refining recipe to use already-refined goods.

My point was that Copper Bar +X is not the only Refining Recipe that uses Copper Ore.

As a tanner, I'm planning on tanning for hire. I plan on asking 20% of the base material (ie, not the chemicals) as a fee.

It's not such an issue for smelting, because metal seems much more common than pelts, but as a tanner, I'd only travel to work some base quantity of hides. Traveling across the map to handle less than 40 enc worth of materials might not make sense for either party.

I'd like to see a recipe that partially refines poor quality raw resources or salvage.

So if I had 20 units of Poor Iron weighing 2 enc each (whatever the quality is called), I could do a smelting job close to the mine site that turns that crud into 20 units of Pig Iron weighing 0.5 enc each (same as good quality ore). The Pig Iron might be considered a salvage item, but could only be used as iron.

Great idea!

Besides Caravans and Contracts, new feats for ACE roles are coming, perhaps 'field refining' will be in our future too.
Post it on ideascale, Yrme :D

In the spirit of maintaining a pronounceable acronym for these roles now that Commoner has become Freeholder, I hereby propose 'FAE roles' as the new acronym.

Well if we do that we have to account that aristocrat is also no Seneschcal(?).

So. FES?

Seneschal is to aristocrat, as smelter is to freeholder.

In other words, only Commoner changed names. Seneschal is not a replacement name for Aristocrat. It's one of the things an Aristocrat can do.
