PFS Group Size Limit

Pathfinder Society

Hi Gang,
My group and I have been playing Pathfinder since the Core Rulebook hit shelves, but have never played under the PFS. We're getting ready to start a new campaign up and, as GM, I really liked the idea of using the PFS and taking advantage of the resources offered for such a game. However, that said, I've run into a snag: my group is 9 people large on the average (and occasionally can grow to 10 people around holidays).
We play as a home game and have limited space, so splitting the group really isn't a solution (not to mention they like playing as a large group). Is there any way that I can hand wave this? Or are we just not PFS compatible? Thanks in advance.

Hey Sketchpad, welcome to the Pathfinder Society messageboards.

I remember there was a similar inquiry a few weeks ago, and I encourage you to take a look at that thread (not a super long one). There are a few options that might work for your group that involve playing sanctioned Adventure Paths and certain sanctioned modules, as those allow a group to gain Pathfinder Society credit while also using house rules.

As for scenarios and credit, the simple fact of the matter is that the maximum player number is seven, and the soft cap is six. If splitting up your group is impossible, I don't believe playing scenarios for credit is in the cards; however, the scenarios are still great adventures that you could easily adapt for larger groups by adding additional opponents.

Thanks for the welcome and the info, John. It's much appreciated. I kind of figured that was the case, unfortunately.

Also note that the absolute minimum number of people you need for a legal table is 4. 3 players and one GM controlling a pregen. If your group is good at deciding beforehand how many people are going to turn up on a day, you can work out before-hand whether you need 2 GMs instead of one. As long as people are willing to GM, you should be able to accommodate any number of people above 4.

For instance, if you have 9 people showing up for a day, you will have 2 GMs, and 4 players playing under 1 GM and 3 players playing under the second GM with one pregen character in their party.

Unfortunately, Fiddlers, there's no room to split the group where we play. It's probably looking like no PFS for the time being.

Sorry to hear that, mate. One the plus side, there are several really nice sanctioned modules and adventure paths that your players could play and get credit for, and they can apply those to PFS characters that they can take to other PFS events. =)

If the issue is meeting space, there is the option of virtual tabletops, which involves the use of an internet connection and a mic. One that I use regularly is roll20 - it's easy and free to use, and you play from the comfort of your own room (but you don't get to roll dice in person with your mates). But if some of the group commutes from a long distance, this might work out.

Hope this was helpful and you guys work out something! =)

Unfortunately, Fiddlers, virtual tabletops aren't an option either. My group gets together every other Saturday to play and have been playing together for over a decade. To split them up would be rough for everyone involved, and most aren't the VTT sort of players.
In all honesty, I'm considering adapting the PFS system to my campaign, only without registering anything. This opens up some of the other races that folks have talked about, as well as using books like Ultimate Campaign.
Maybe sometime in the future we may slip into PFS officially or maybe it'll expand its requirements to allow larger groups. :)

I have to say, I'm really interested in how you've been playing at a 9-10 player table for over a decade.

I tried this once as a newbie GM and it was a disaster to manage (combat, specifically).
