Should I bother building a new computer?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Well, first, here is my current System.

MB ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 790GX/SB750 RT
CPU AMD|PH II X3 720 BK AM3 2.8G RT
VGA SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL HD4870 1G R
MEM 2Gx2|GSK F3-10666CL9D-4GBNQ R

This is directly off my invoice from when I built my current system back in 2009. Tom's lists my CPU as a 3rd tier gaming CPU on their Gaming CPU Hierarchy Chart with nothing from AMD in their first Tier.

Should I upgrade just my Graphics Card and perhaps system memory?

I was looking at getting something that can handle the newer FM2/FM2+ CPUs but if they aren't on the list (from last month) I'm guessing they aren't intended for gaming.

This is my biggest problem with building systems only every 5 years or so, I don't keep up with the current tech and don't know what to get!

The FM2's are a bit off from being good for gaming. Your processor will do just as good if not better.

Honestly, I would hold off for now. From what I have seen in Alpha, you system should run it but not at high end settings.

I would have to look it up, but your processor may be unlockable to a quad core and more then likely overclocked to 3.5 ghz. That will run the game quite well.

Graphics wise, PFO is using DX9 which which your card should handle fine.

I would say, save the money and wait till it will not run the game... then upgrade and get better bang for you buck.

Yes. I recommend buying a new computer late 2015.
Windows 9 becomes avaliable, USB 3.0 Type C connector used, 10 nanometer chips enter mass production, DDR4 memory, Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) Readers/Writers become avaliable, Adaptive Sync port on video cards, SATA Express for better SSD Hard Drives

Consider just a small upgrade for now.

- a graphics card with 2Gb or more memory as textures are a big issue in this game
- more ram if your OS supports it

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to buy a new Video Card, 8GB more ram and a 2TB Hard drive. That should last me at least another year.

Whether to upgrade should not depend on this game in any way, but on the 3 eternal questions:

1- do you want to? (*)
2- can you afford it?
3- will doing it get you into trouble (**)(***)

(*) if you really really want to, men generally don't bother with the other two questions.
(**) if you don't understand the question, you are probably a one-person household.
(***) if yes, re-evaluate question 1.

I was basing building new or upgrading on weather I really needed to yet. I opted upgrade with the thought that at least the Hard Drive will follow to the new computer when I get around to building a new one, and it was the most expensive part I bought for upgrading.

As for Question 3, even being a one-person household could get you into trouble if you don't understand question 2 properly :P

First computer building thread I have found here. Is this the one, or do the message boards have a computer for understanding (I searched briefly, but didn't see one)?

Just had to say: I'm worse than you: The last computer I built was in 2003 (with 2002 vintage technology); I had a newer one (2005 vintage) as a hand-me-down, but it fried recently; my oldest computer is 1998 vintage. So I REALLY need to make a new one.

What? You aren't hanging on to your Radio Shack Color Computer from 1982? Shame on you.

No, actually, shame on me for not hanging onto the Apple ][+ from 1977/1978.

And I had a college classmate (unfortunately no longer with us) who hung onto *minicomputers* from the 1970s and 1980s . . . and he's the one who got my Apple ][+.

@Ikeren/Giorgio -- thanks for the links.

One of our server racks at work is a PDP8 frame.
