Need side quest for a solo Skinsaw Murder module


Rise of the Runelords


Hi there,

I have been running a 1 player rise of the runelords. He is a fighter, I usually accompany him with 2 dmpcs of his choice among 3-4, one is a cleric of Desna which he always need. It has been running pretty smoothly, he is right now entering the thistletop goblin base. He is 4th level. He will probably be 5th level when he finish Burnt Offerings.

I have begun reading Skinsaw Murders. A few questions:
- 5th level with 2 dmpcs of equal level seem a bit low for his first serious encounter, the ghouls in the corn fields. I would probably like to throw in an optional side quest he can in between Burnt Offerings and Skinsaw Murders or when the murders begin. That would boost his level to 6-7. Any premade adventure module I can use that would be near Sandpoint for 4-5th level character, that would be easy to fit into the story?
- Story tips: The great thing about solo adventure is that you can personalize them. Skinsaw murders read a lot like an horror flick. A few ideas I had:
- I somehow had the idea of involving the Sandpoint Demon somewhere in the story.
- Kill his cleric friend as one of the skinsaw murder. This would make it much more personal and remove his healing safety, making him much more weary when encountering undead enemies. A sidequest would probably involve getting his friend raised. Not sure about this idea.
Any story tips, online material or stuff I can add to the story?


Have you looked at the One on One Adventures by Expeditious Retreat Press? I can think of two of those that would not be too difficult to tailor to what you are looking for, especially if using one player and 2 dmpcs of his level.

#3 The Forbidden Hills is for a barbarian or ranger level 5 to 7 solo.
It has gnolls, but that could be changed to degenerate goblins fairly easily but I would consider using denounced Shoanti cultists worshipping a skewed version of Zutha, the Runelord of Gluttony; the temple could have been a diplomatic embassy in the lands of his rival Karzoug, the Runelord of Greed. A good way to foreshadow what is to come with as much or as little info as you want.

#16 The Lost City of Bransik is for a rogue level 6 to 8 solo.
Change out the premise to a special tome needed by the Sandpoint sage concerning Rune Magic and the Runelords, or maybe a spellbook of sin magic sought by a mysterious buyer, maybe using a front man for the job. Let the player explore the lost city as an exposed reef cliff a day or two out from Sandpoint holding a ruined way station of old Thassilon. You might leave off the trailing assassin, or use him not to kill the pc, but to steal the tome for the Runelord once it has been liberated.

#3 is in the Adventures Compendium while #16 is available alone. Both are on sale this weekend as part of the I Can't Make It To Paizocon Sale.

Or you could always peruse the Adventure Finder to find something that interests you, maybe a Society adventure set in or around Varisia so as to not be too far from Sandpoint.

Actually any 4th level adventure will do since he is mostly always followed by 2 dmpcs of his pick. I will probably give him a "either of them" choice between one of these 2 adventures. Some of the other modules in the adventures look also interesting.

Anyhow thanks for the adaptation for the runelords campaign. I'll probably punctuate the runelords module by a side quest module.

HA! I know what I'll do!

I've brought "The Lost City of Bransik" but it is unsatisfactory as my PC are getting used to the "Burnt Offering" high quality module with color map and well written plot.

After much research, I've found exactly what I was looking for. In Skinsaw Murders there is a mention about a side adventure about going into the Brinestump Marsh to beat the licktoad goblins. I just happened to find all the material I needed in "Jade Regent - The Brinewall Legacy" and "We be goblins!". That fit perfectly with the end of the "Burnt Offering" module

- In Thistletop, I will hint that they have sent an envoy to the Brinestump Marsh" to warn the Licktoad goblins of the attack on Thistletop.
- When Thistletop is cleared and they return to Sandpoint, there will be a big attack featuring
- 4 goblins riding a rampaging Otyugh.
- 5-6 Boggards looting shops (they made a deal with the goblin and are only looting)
- A bunch of bugbears & goblins have raided the orphanage and are kidnapping kids for the swamp witch. They're loading cages on 4 small ships on the beach behind the Glasswork. The PC has to stop them, the more kids they save, the more XP. If any ship leave Sandpoint, they will have to rescue the kids latter in the swamp, either in the Licktoad village or the witch lair.
- Then the mission is to go raid the Licktoad village in the Brinestump Marsh, same thing as in "Jade Regent - The Brinewall Legacy", I will just raise the CR of each encounters. When they finally beat chief Rendwattle Gutwad, they learn the witch whereabout.
- For the witch lair, I will use the Old Shipwreck in "We be goblins!". I don't want to use "Jade Regent" too much just in case I play it latter with my players. I will again raise the CR with probably some faceless stalker and a custom made witch.

Hopefully, that should give my players the extra level they need for "The Skinsaw Murders".
