I once rolled six 1s in a row in a fight against a demon, in which my player's character is the primary damage dealer. The fight almost ended in a TPK.

Then I rolled a natural 20 3 times in a row when he needed a 2 or more to succeed at a heal check to stabilize his party members.

This happens to my players ALL THE TIME in our Kingmaker game. Important must-make check or combat roll? Barely scrape by, or fail. Casual knowledge check or other non-emergency skill? Nat 20s all around.

Then they should 'know' to try something else.
