multiple damage resolving question

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

probably not the most groundbreaking question ive ever asked, but it did come up tonight in a game, so I wanted to clarify it, we hit a pit trap, I failed it, and so the card says each character takes 1d4 combat damage, how does the damage resolve? I ruled it using magic the gathering knowledge, saying the 1d4 was like saying X damage, so I made a single d4 roll, and resolved that one roll against all characters, which was just me and my gf in this case, I also ran into it again on black fang's abilities, the gist of the question is in situations like that, does each character that takes damage from the ability roll their own damage, or is it a single roll dealt to all characters?

Roll the 1d4 separately for each character.

In the Rules: Rolling Dice sidebar, the rulebook says:

Rules wrote:
If a card calls for a die roll that affects multiple characters (for example, if it says that each character at a location is dealt 1d4 damage), roll separately for each character.

(I admit, I'm not 100% sure I've got the latest rulebook.)

And this FAQ entry extends that to every time you roll a die for multiple characters or situations. For example, I think there's a villain in AP1 where you add 1d4 to the difficulty to defeat it, and it has two checks -> roll 1d4 separately for each check.

Nefrubyr is correct—roll separately for each person, each time.
