me and my girlfriend have been going through the adventure path since the beginning finally died tonight due to a ruling I had to make a choice on, wanted to make sure I made the ruling correctly, we, mainly she, was fighting the dragon villain in AP5S2 and lost the first combat check, using thw spiked chain, she then discarded it to re roll and succeeded, then into the second combat check, she wanted to use the kaijutsu ally, or whatever her name is, who has the ablility to be banished to add a card from your discard pile to hand, which she wanted to do to get her weapon back, but the way I read how things resolve, is she would have to determine dice and all that before playing any cards, so with no weapon in hand she would have to try punching it to death, due to that, her roll ended up being 2 under what was needed, and died, so was my ruling correct? could she have even used that ability period during combat checks? and as i realized after our death, could i have taken the second check myself and us won due to me defeating the second check? I didn't realize it sooner because we have never been in a situation where we had did attempt a check that someone else started, I just remember reading it was possible, also as a heads up, I then tried fighting it myself, and lost and died, not having her character's ability to help really made things seem near impossible, we use custom characters, and I now worry our characters might be too overpowered and make the game too easy, so I will be posting our characters in another thread, asking for feedback on opinions if anything seems too unpowerful or out of flavor

If you were in the same location, you could have attempted one of the checks. The character that encounters the card must attempt one check, and it doesn't even have to be the first one; any others can be attempted by anyone else at the location
The ally ability she wanted to use could not have been played at all during the encounter. During an encounter, you can only play cards and powers that have a direct effect on the check or step that you are on.

Since we are on the subject of timing. When is it appropriate in the turn sequence to play cards like 'cure' or 'potion of healing'?
Cheers.
Any time except during an encounter, even if it's not your turn. You also can't do it once you begin the "end your turn and reset your hand" phase of your turn.
