Question regarding the "Mark of Wrath"

Rise of the Runelords

Hello everyone! I got a question with regards to the Mark of Wrath obtained from killing the Champion of Wrath in the Runeforge:

Upon defeating the champion of wrath and scoring the last hit I was branded with the Mark of wrath; my GM immediately sent me a email with the benefits that it entails, which I'll admit made me droll. I eagerly wrote in the bonuses and was excited to try the fire-shield ability for the first time.

Since the halls of wrath were empty, as we had laid to waste all signs of life in that particular wing i had to wait for another hall of sin to test out my new tattoo!

Upon entering another wing we faced enemies and I immediately used a swift action to activate the fire shield ability of the tattoo, to which my DM responded:

"Nope, you are no longer In the halls of wrath and the tattoo doesn't function, also please remove the bonuses it gave while outside the halls of wrath."

I was dumbfounded, this Mark and the bonuses it gave were given by the last boss of the wing. So by the time I actually had the Mark and a chance to use it there was nothing to use it on. This seemed fishy to me...

So that is why I am here posting, looking for the wisdoms of those who have read the adventure path (I don't wanna spoil the story for myself by looking it up)...did my GM house rule me out of the Mark of Wrath bonuses or is that how it's intended to work?

I appreciate any insight in advance, I'm hoping he misread something as I'd love to give this tattoo a try :)!

I can't find anything that says it works only in the Halls of Wrath. Looks like a houserule or cockup.

Thanks for the reply Mudfoot!

This is distressing, perhaps changes over the different editions changed the properties?
Also when he linked me the d20 site:

Mark of Wrath (Su):
She wears the mark of her rulership on her flesh—a faintly glowing tattoo-like rune on her forehead that moves through the generations from one ruler to the next. The mark of wrath provides her with a +1 insight bonus to AC and on attack and damage rolls. Once per day as a swift action, she can call upon the mark to protect her with a fire shield (CL 15th). If she is slain in combat, the mark of wrath transfers to the brow of her defeater. It can only be transferred again on that character’s death at the hands of another, but can be removed with a successful break enchantment against CL 20th. Once removed in this manner, it vanishes forever.

It mentioned nothing about locational restrictions. Anyone else with the adventure path able to confirm Mudfoot's findings?

For me, the biggest thing to remember is rule 0. I would advise asking your GM about it, rather than attempting to get support on the forums. None of us are your GM: we can't speak to why he made the decision he did. And ultimately: it is his call. I would be frustrated, too, if I never got to use a really cool ability. I think that sharing that with your GM will help to make him better, and is the only chance of getting anything changed in your game.

I couldn't agree more, this post was made in response to a failed attempt to get clarification on the matter from my GM.

Upon badgering my DM some more (mentioning others were unable to find what he was mentioning) he relooked and realized he mixed up the condition of the mark with something else within the rune forge. Thanks for giving me some insight on the matter and the confidence to continue inquiring over the matter!
