Monster review if you would

Homebrew and House Rules

Alright, so i am getting ready to run my campaign here soon. My own custom world is coming along nicely. Adventure ideas have been found (writers block is killer), and everything seems to be in working order.

Now comes the fun part. I have made some custom/homebrew monsters and i need to make sure they are balanced and wont TPK my friends when they come to play. While i don't THINK they will... I'm human and make mistakes.

So I'm asking all the kind people here at paizo to take a look, critique, examine, scrutinize, and let me know what your thoughts are. If you think they are overpowered, underpowered, could be made better, what have you.

Thank you and happy gaming. On to the monsters!

The bestial and terrible orog is the result of a union between an orc and an ogre. Born of fury and bloodlust, the orog is a creature of immense strength and cunning, born into a world of fighting and war.

Though smarter then their ogre heritage, and stronger then their orcish heritage, the Orog does not technically fit in with either. Often times orogs are used as shock troops by orcish tribes fortunate enough to have them. The orog make excellent warriors and berserkers, possessing a natural bloodlust and a sadistic streak even their orcish companions find unsettling. This often times puts them at odds with the tribe and many orogs can be found wandering the countryside searching for battle and the ability to sate their more carnal desires.

An adult orog is roughly 6 1/2 feet tall and 260 pounds. Their bodies are powerfully muscled, this includes their jaw muscles which allows for a terrible bite with its tusked jaws. Orogs themselves can interbreed with regular orcs, though often times this results in normal orc offspring.

That is my version of the Orog, i know there are others, but they never really made sense to me the way they were written. So i decided to make my own. Let me know what you think, and i will be posting more later on.

Bump

According to the monster creation benchmark table you're a tad beyond CR 2 on the offensive side. I'd lower Strength, switch to a regular battleaxe, maybe even switch out Weapon Focus. Or give it an extra HD, bump it 1 CR, and call it a day.
Just my 2 cents. YMMV.

- You are ok on your hp - 23 hp is closer to 20 hp(CR2) than 30 hp (CR3) so OK on that
- You AC value is closer to CR 3 (I have possible fix you may or may not like).
- Your Saves are ok - one good save +1 over list while the other good save is -1 under list - so thats a wash. Poor save is in line with CR2

As Propsken stated, your high attack value and average damages are a bit off (+3 over listed to hit and damage is around +2 points over list).

A quick fix would be to change the natural armor to +1, throw in a light shield (bringing your AC value to 14, in line to CR 2) and then giving it a one handed weapon to offset your current damage range (again, bringing it in line with a CR 2 creature)

Or, if you are dead-set on having this guy as an optimized CR 2 you could always give it the Orcish drawback of Light Sensitivity - that could mitigate some of the higher values a little as an offset.

Alright, modified a couple things on the Orog, in regards to the suggestions made, to make it more in line with a CR 2. Let me know what you think.

Looks good - solid fighter in the CR 2 catagory.

The only thing that can be a corner case - I'm not sure how they calculate Rage abilities in tabulation with base creatures.

As part of a class you follow the class rules for increasing CR - with this guy as a built in, it could be different.

In almost all cases when your players fight these guys they are going to be raging - which is a pretty powerful ability.

Let me see if I can find a comparable creature with built in rage and do a CR breakdown.

Thanks Auxmaulos, and that would be appreciated. I originally got the idea from the badger of all things.

I am going to be off for a while (work and all that), I'll be back on later.

Happy Gaming! :)
