Just for some (hopefully humorous) perspective on the truth behind what these folks at both Goblinworks and Paizo are dealing with. Are there some exaggerations? Sure. But this is not really all that far away from what it is to be a programmer or web developer.

Excellent article. Probably Obama's fault.

As someone who has been a professional software developer for twenty years, I have to ask... what exaggerations? :]

No question, the GW&Paizo folks are doing incredible things. I'm still amazed that they even attempted the whole nightmarish 'move all of our account data from one store to another' maneuver... let alone pulled it off with only the fairly minor problems we've seen. They've got a small group, so the biweekly 'Agile' development cycle they seem to be running should work well, but it's still a crazy amount of work for the timeframes they've been following.

But GW are totally cheating! They use middleware and everyone knows that if you use middleware you don't have to write a single line of code.

So logically the PFO team consists exclusively of designer doing this and art people being hip and mysterious.

Middleware is a magical thing that allows you to get the 90% of the work that takes 10% of the time finished all that much faster. However, when it comes to that last 10%, the addition of "magic" can be scary and nightmarish.

BUT middleware solves EVERYTHING! I hear last weeks update of Unity3D has a voice command feature that you use by saying into the microphone " I want a game that plays like Dawn of War and Call of Duty and looks like Borderlands with a sick Skrillex soundtrack, Bro" and in 15 minutes flat it writes itself and installs the finished product on your PC.

Ha I wish that were the case. Would make my job 1000x easier! Mix elements of FTL, XCom: Enemy Unknown, Diablo, Neverwinter Nights and Endless Space that looks like Fallout > easy button > skip 24 months of development and put it up on Steam! One can dream...

The scary thing is that one day, likely long after I'm playing celestial ping-pong, it might be more true than we think.

Shoot, when I started programming the idea of auto-complete editors hinting the parameters of a function call would have been considered sci-fi artificial intelligence!

Just a question: What do we do then when we invent an AI that solves all of humanity's problems? Or are those problems so coded into ourselves that there will be no humans left to witness when all the problems are solved? :)

I'm guessing extinction is that solution.

You have failed to take into account the regulatory and contractual restrictions. THis is a programmers utopia and leaves out the reality of commerce and regulatory space.
