I'm trying to get active again after a several month absence and have to use a smartphone to do so. The problem I am having is that while I can create a new alias in terms of setting up a new name and avatar, I can neither enter any text in that describes the new character nor view the text that I had entered long ago for already existing aliases. Is there something simple I'm overlooking or is this some sort of glitch between this site and smartphones? I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S4 with the latest operating system update as of this weekend.

Ive had slightly similar issues with my Samsung. Occasionally the links or areas you click on just do not function correctly. I normally just click on something else a try again.
You can also try changing your internet settings a bit, like maybe activate/disable Desktop View, or change the default zoom. See if that helps. Another possibility is if you downloaded a keyboard or font it might not be working fully.

Other than you might need to refresh after changing setting, or the possibility that the info you are trying to change might be locked in (after 10 posts I believe), Im not sure.
Does your digital keyboard pop up when you select those areas? Can you alter anything else? Are you signed in from your phone (or is the popup maybe under a different tab)?
Another smartphone issue (Samsung Galaxy Mini): As of this morning, all posts show up with the "List this post" confirmation window opened.
It's very annoying and makes reading a thread quite frustrating.
