The Price of Immortality Trilogy: The Nirmathas Government

Liberty's Edge

Hi All,

I am currently running the Price of Immortality Trilogy for a bunch of relatively new players. I am also using the opportunity to flesh out a campaign using Obsidian Portal so that I can use it as a kind of Guide to Nirmathas.

Whilst linking things together, and thinking about potential questions the players might have, I noticed that in the 2nd adventure, Masks of the Living God, it mentions the following positions on the Tamran Council:

  • Forest Marshal
  • The Speaker of the Bark
  • The Speaker of the Heart
  • The Speaker of the Leaves

Those positions sound great and stick with theme, but what do their positions entail? I have searched far and wide on the net for a point of reference, or even for something made up, but can't seem to find anything.

Does anyone have some suggestions of what the Speakers jobs entail?

Okay... the Bark sounds like the defensive coordinator, the guy who makes sure their settlements survive and have access to weapons, soldiers, hideaways, training, whatever is needed. The Heart is the coordinator of the civil society, the stuff the Bark is meant to protect, and what gives the military branches the resources they need. The Leaves should then be the administrator of the aggressive branches of the military, the one shaping their guerrilla tactics, and perhaps also the one making sure enough secrets are kept from the enemy. Sound workable?

The Forrest Marshal is the leader of the entire Nation of Nirmathas (this is the only one that I think is directly said in the text of the module).

What we know:
Speaker of the Leaves is an aristocrat.

Speaker of the Heart is a half-elf aristocrat/bard.

Speaker of the Bark is a Fighter/Ranger.

My take from when I ran the game:
Making some projections based on these names and classes, I assumed the Speaker of the Bark is the primary military leader of the Tamran (behind only the Forrest Marshal), in charge of defense and policing of the city.

The Speaker of the Heart is an advocate for the people, the top diplomat, so to speak, and looks out for their best interests, this would be the person most likely to be keeping an eye on the new cult that has sprung up in town.

The Speaker of the Leaves is in charge of looking out for the best interests of the surrounding natural areas and making sure the city lives in harmony with the surrounding environment.

When I ran it, I mostly cut out the Pathfinder contact and had the players dealing with the Speaker of the Heart, who is a person in a position of authority to authorize their exploits against the temple.

I'm guessing you have done what I am going to do based on the information gleaned from the Chronicles Pathfinder Podcast. They suggested something similar regarding removing the Pathfinder Society connection.

Regarding the definitions, I had come to similar conclusion as per Ninja's suggestion, and will do up an explanation based on that.

Thanks friends :)
