Vurnirn (MMC spoilers)

Reign of Winter

Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone who has run / is intending to run MMC plans on doing a bit more in Vurnirn (City of Centaurs)

I would quite like to put some RP elements in, notably because it is an unusual city inhabited by a largely monstrous race, with a first language (I am assuming Iobarian) that the PCs do not speak yet

Also :
- It seems to be the most reasonable place to introduce some new PCs
- I want to see how my group copes when they insist on all creating characters with 10 charisma (it has not gone well so far in Ioabaria)

My current intentions :
- Use the city to sow some background for Vsevolod
- Use the city to all PCs to buy and sell. BUT not at favourable prices unless they do bartering / exchanging (I would assume this would be mainly how the largely nomadic centaurs work rather than in gold coins)

Some questions I have / opinions I am after:

- I would assume there would be no "Inns" so to speak, and the majority of the shops and buildings will be tent like structures? Is this how others envisaged this? (Definitely no stairs)

- What about taverns? I am having trouble picturing what a centaur bar would be like

- It is not clear who is responsible for guarding the place. I assume representatives from each of the clans?

- Do people think the night ambush encounter could reasonably work here or is there no way the demons would be able to maneuver through a city undetected by the non PC guards (whereas encampment / wilderness as written would be more reasonable)

Overall I think there is a lot of scope for fun / diplomatic blunders in this place and am eager to try and flesh it out. I would appreciate any help

Thanks

For my Vurnirn, I used instead of gold pieces, their price is measured in pheasants. Most of the clans handle bartering in terms of The Hunt. Meaning each kill can be exchanged for something while the merchants will decide the reasonable price for the animal that has been hunted. Such as, the kill of an elk would be worth maybe twenty pheasants while a rat may not be worth anything.

As for Korag Kaag, I had him be hospitable and he was the Rashalka clan leader. He holds the most political influence over the other clans. Therefore, with my PCs, I gave them a tent of their own with food. Erdija was their guide through the town. However, I had it to where the clans only meet here on occasion, for discussion on particular topics. In such case, it was Vselvod, who is becoming and increasing problem over the Hoofwood Forest.

I also played Sedona out to be an overconfident hunter claiming that he was the best Hunter in the clan. Therefore, they sent him off to find Svathurim (which is a monster is an upcoming dungeon, but I thought he worked better as a horror story of the tribe rather than an ally to Vselvod) who had a weapon given to his father, a Kistochiee avatar, by Kistochiee himself which can transform into a mighty hammer and a powerful bow.

Being that Vurnirn is on a delta between two rivers, I gave my PCs the social obstacle of having to bathe in the river. Which caused them to have issues with it because of the microbes in the water that can make them sick.

Also, I made it to where the 'runts' of the clans became shamans who learned magic, which is the weaker side of their various clans. The shamans also use their power to become their tanners. Therefore, their armor can become possibly magical thanks to how they do it.

These provide awesome topics and cultural aspects for your PCs, especially if they are spellcasters. They will go through Artrosa and show off the fact that they helped the warriors with their 'weaker' strength! :-) I hope this helped.

Sedona is Erdija.....damned autocorrect!

Sounds interesting. I may borrow some aspects - such as making only certain types of magic armour be available (the tanning part).

The runt aspect is fun (could also be amusing to extend that to runts and women as my 2 wizards are male). But that wouldn't explain erdija (and also I believe one of the listed key chieftains)

How did / will the social aspect play out? Do I understand correctly that the scenario is they have to bathe in the river and it would be rude to refuse (even though they are scared of the germs?)

If I was to use that I may have to introduce a cultural ceremony because otherwise my pc's would likely just refuse anyway :-(
(although in this medieval fantasy settings I can't imagine bathing is too common anyway...)

Well...I am sorry I couldn't respond earlier, but I got it to play out with my two spellcasters that are in my game. They cut off the head of Vselovod and presented it to a council of the various chieftains of the Hoofwood. While Kaag I played out as being one that goes against tradition, then one from the Tsolniva clan being extremely traditional with the rest talking amongst themselves at the death of Vselovod by the efforts of the runts.

They are expecting to be beaten or assassinated in their tent that night because they showed off their 'runty' prowess to those native to the Hoofwood and their hunters.

As for the river, basically they just bathe in the river but, the PCs may not wish to because of the water and the possibility of getting sick. To refuse if fine, but if they get too stinky then the cemtaurs may bathe them with force :-P

As for Erdija, I had it to where the cemtaurs who are less than 21 years are little more than dirt. They are simply to watch and collect and occasionally hunt. Erdija may have snuck out to go hunt bigger game which would make up for his levels.

Before killing Vselovod, the PCs happened upon a Rashalka scout encounter. Where they were sent to check on the PCs to see if they were okay. When the PCs asked for help with Vselovod, they said no and walked away.

Well, during the council meeting, they accused the Rashalka scouts of cowardice because they did not join in the fight against Vselovod where they lost a comrade. After the meeting, Kaag had Erdija punish them by branding them. One of the PCs, being an outsider, peeked in and Kaag rushed out of the tent and told him to never do that again.

However, shouts came from Kaags tent while Erdija got beat because he wad the one who presented the head of Vselovod.

That's how I played that one out.
