Race Creation Guide

I wanted to create a Large race that didn't get their speed modified by encumbrance or armor, but I didn't want to add any more RP to their already high cost of 7 (well, any more than is absolutely necessary), so I was wondering if the Slow Speed (-1 RP) quality could be used.

That is, if you have a race that has a base speed of 30 feet and the race is Large would their speed also never be modified by armor or encumbrance?

My rational is that a Large creature would normally have 40 feet so it would be like making the Medium (which normally has 30 feet) walk at 20.

I was also wondering if it could be applied on the other end for a race that has a base speed of 10 feet and the race is Small, and a Small race would normally walk at 20 feet. Or does this not work that way?

In relation, is the 7 RP cost for a Large race worth it? Has anyone played a Large race or had Large races as PCs?

I have run a game that included a large melee warrior who had reach weapon. It was a lot of fun the player, and its good to see a player smile when he gets to kick some ass. But for me, the novelty wore thin as the combats became predicable. I don't mind customizing some combats to a character in order to show that the enemies can be smart too, but it became too much. Imagine if, as a player, every enemy you faced had reach.

On the other, I am perfectly fine with temporary size increases. The change of pace keeps it interesting.

Could you explain this a bit more?

For something Large, the text reads "Large creatures gain a +2 size bonus to Strength and a –2 size penalty to Dexterity. Large races take a –1 size penalty to their AC, a –1 size penalty on attack rolls, a +1 bonus on combat maneuver checks and to their CMD, and a –4 size penalty on Stealth checks. A Large creature takes up a space that is 10 feet by 10 feet and has a reach of 5 feet."

I'd imagine if I kept the regular reach at 5 ft, even with weapons providing reach, they'd still be at a disadvantage more often than not given their -1 to AC, and the fact that they could be flanked more easily thanks to their size. Otherwise the +1 on combat maneuver checks and +1 CMD act like half the bonus from Coordinated Maneuvers and Coordinated Defense respectively (essentially together they're equal to a feat or 4 RP).

I would think having them move at a slower overland movement would also cause issues, but I'm not sure.

Ah. I assumed your reach would be 10 feet. I guess thats not so bad. Your damage output will increase, but also consider that you're going to attract more attacks, and it will easier to flank you.

Ah, I see. No, I'm going strictly by what the Large size reads in the race creation guide and they're not getting any extensions to that.
