There's really only two ways this could go.
One is there aren't enough votes to change the system. You're basically asking for the option to move from representative republic to full democracy. Putting aside the fact that those representatives will do everything in their power to avoid losing their position, I doubt most citizens would be interested in putting forth the effort to educate themselves on the issue* - that's what their representatives are for. So this idea's likely doomed from the start for that reason.
But if by some miracle it does get through, you run into a second issue: this will take freaking forever. So yeah, say self-representation kicks in. How long do they wait for votes? Who's going to count them all? How long is that going to take? How do they weigh the self-representation votes against the elected representatives' votes? (The quick-and-dirty answer for this is "you either get full self-rep or you have the elected reps, you can't have both" but again, I'm pretty sure the Status Quo will fight like cornered dogs to prevent that kind of change.) And those are just the first questions that came off the top of my head.

The sentiment's not worth much when the answer is irrelevant to what happens.
