GM credit and negative boons

When you apply GM credit to a character, do you have to take all the boons on the sheet? There are many scenarios with negative "boons" such as for failing to accomplish certain goals, or for angering a particular group. Are you allowed to only take the good ones and cross off all the bad ones?

Yes. See the guide, page 37.

I have a character that i took the "negative" boon on because it fit what i wanted the character to be. But yes when you GM you get to CHOOSE any and all boons you wish as long as they are not contradictory

Yes. See the guide, page 37.

the guide just says you may take boons. Which I've also interpreted to mean you may not. But it doesn't explicitly say that. For the most part it's not a big deal. Getting that -2 to diplomacy checks with x faction you'll never run into again doesn't matter much. If you played it, you wouldn't get the penalty boon unless you messed up, so most people would have it crossed off anyway.

But there are a few scenarios (I'm thinking of some specials) with some really nice boons, which are balanced with some bad ones on the same sheet. If you played it, you would always get the negative boon, but as a GM you get to cross it off? Just wanted to make sure I was doing it right and it is intended that way to be a perk for GMs.

As a GM, we want to thank them for giving back to the community by picking and choosing which boons they receive for their character. So, no a GM does not have to take a negative boon if they do not want to. They may just choose the positive boon.

Cool. Thanks!

Mike, How does this apply to season 5 and the faction specific boons? I assume these can only be applied to a GM character of the correct faction. (Problematic because some of the early chrons didn't say X faction only.)

FLite: John Compton clarified here that 'those boons are for members of the respective factions only.' There's no special bypass implied for GM credit chronicles.

What about a particular negative boon you get from entering the dungeon the entire scenario takes place in?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I recommend against picking that boon as a GM.

if you GM a scenario, you can avoid even negative boons that you get automatically for entering a certain dungeon. that is one of the great things gained for GMing.
